SKOPE NEWS FOR MAY 6, 2015

YARDLETS “GOOD HANGS”

On the recording of “Good Hangs”, Goldberg Jr., who also produced the album, said, “With our first album, Middle Ages, we recorded as fast and shittily as possible with no-redo’s of takes allowed, and went for a Buddy Holly-on-speed vibe with everything doused in fuzz and gasoline. “Good Hangs” took a bit longer, two-years actually. The concept was more along the lines of what would the villains in Mad Max and the replicants of Blade Runner sound like if they started a band and then threw a dash of bad 80’s gated reverb on everything.”

RJD2 X STS NEW SINGLE

The single, entitled “Hold On, Here It Go” was premiered by Rolling Stone and is a unique, shapeshifting song that intermittently omits the drums and simultaneously modulates upwards throughout the song. Describes RJ, “Rarely do I cut a track and get the goosebumps, slam dunk type feeling RIGHT away, but it happened on this one. The chorus was fly, with the horns and the drums in the pocket (shout out to Bohemian Dub Orchestra for putting it over the top!), so there was almost no way to take the energy higher. The only way to go for the verses was to take it all the way down-no rhythm section at all. To give it some momentum, the chord changes keep shifting up octaves every 8/16 bars or so. Definitely one of my proudest moments ever making rap music. This was one of the first songs that we cut where I stood back was like, WOW, this cat Jordan can sing his ASS off!”

WADESHARK “WARHEAD ORPHAN”

WADESHARK is the recording project of multi-instrumentalists Jason Allan Wade of Wade&Sons and Tarra Thiessen of Sharkmuffin. Their debut EP Cyanide Baby was recorded in Wade’s protected Manhattan penthouse in the winter months of 2015 with Wade on guitar/vocals/strings/piano and Thiessen on drums & backing vocals. Swirling dark harmonies, bowed banjos and discordant string sections combine with Wade’s dirty silvertone guitar & Thiessen’s minimal drums to create the atmosphere of a killers dream. “Warhead Orphan” is the first track off Cyanide Baby, which sounds like the first shine of hospital lights once you realize you’re still alive and slowly coming off of Methadone.

STEALING SHEEP “DEADLOCK”

Following excellent reviews for their second album Not Real and with their biggest London headline show to date at XOYO tomorrow, STEALING SHEEP have just unveiled a typically inventive video for new single ‘Deadlock’. Of the video director Ewan Jones Morris says: “I knew the band were into La Planete Sauvage as they had soundtracked a screening of it, so I proposed an idea that incorporated elements of retro-looking animation and otherworldly sci-fi. They obviously had thoughts of their own and our ideas meshed somewhere in the middle.” Deadlock is currently premiering on Stereogum.

LIL SILVA “DRUMATIC”

Lead track ‘Drumatic’ comes tearing out of the vinyl grooves with unidentified midrange sounds that could be from Herbie Hancock’s ‘Watermelon Man’ before surging waves of sound energy power the track forward into this decade. ‘New Squeeze’ builds silky electronic tension around complex polyrhythms and ravey filtered stabs, racing into a dynamic rolling drop. ‘606’ carries his signature ‘Lil Silva’ name tag over a matrix of vocal and 808 samples, rooted in minimalism but with his unique swing.
