CHEENA STREAM “DID I TELL YOU LAST NIGHT?” HERE

The five members of Cheena – Walker Behl, Margaret Chardiet, Keegan Dakkar, Logan Montana, and Eugene Terry–were all born and raised in New York City and have all cut their teeth in its musical underground. The band formed in 2014 out of their shared affinity for ’77 punk and a mutual respect for Mercer Arts-era NYC early glam and West Coast country punk. They were all friends playing the underground punk circuit, each with the desire to form a band outside of their own genre niches.

CHRIS STAMEY FINDS ‘EUPHORIA’ ON NEW STUDIO ALBUM

The album’s available for pre-order with instant download of “Invisible,” which premiered today at Brooklyn Vegan.

Recorded at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium and his own Modern Recording with the help of Jeff Crawford, the 10-song set finds Stamey returning to his electric roots with an emotionally resonant set of rocking, melodically infectious, sonically bracing new tunes, with expansive arrangements incorporating horns alongside unexpected sonic textures.

“I found these songs inside the same dilapidated old Silvertone lipstick guitar that I’d written my first records on,” Stamey asserts. “Maybe that’s why it sounds a bit like those records in some ways.” In addition to Stamey’s own memorable compositions, the album highlights includes the rousing opening track “Universe-sized Arms,” a previously unreleased Ryan Adams composition that Adams suggested he record.

DAMINAN LAZARUS “VERMILLION”

Transported to glistening new realms, the bubbling deep house rolls beneath the revelatory soul of LA singer-songwriter and guitarist Moses Sumney. ‘Vermillion’ marks the first of two appearances from the singer on the album.

“Vermillion” will land with an interstellar remix package as well. French techno connoisseur Agoria leads us on a minimal, spaced out trip through shining synths and swift vocal echoes. Acclaimed house maverick and Hot Creations head honcho Jamie Jones has been closing his DJ sets for the last few weeks with his own remix as well. Its bouncing, old school house tip bounding beneath bright gospel turns of phrase, it is quickly approaching near classic status with arms aloft receptions on the dancefloor. And finally Berlin’s Deniz Kurtel, who pulls her penchant for polyrhythmic percussion to the forefront , casting sweet tribal grooves across an original surely destined to become a dance floor anthem this summer.

KAIL BAXLEY ALBUM TRAILER

“Sometimes you have to tear your f@#$*ng guts out… sometimes it’s just there. Music is a fluid thing that never flows the same way twice,” explains KaiL Baxley about his upcoming earthy, organic and super-soulful album A Light That Never Dies (Forty Below Records; release date June 2, 2015). Self-described as “soul swagger” which captures its precise tone and sound almost exactly, he explains “It’s kinda got a throbbing swing to it all for some reason. It just comes out that way… it gives you a little swagger when you walk.”

Warmly analog and delving a depth of soul that recalls Astral Weeks-era Van Morrison if percolated through a slow-burning hiphop shuffle, A Light That Never Dies effortlessly melts genres, from the 50s croon (“Tell the Falling Sun”), to country blues (“Owe”), to vintage 70s soul with gospel/blues flourishes (“The Ballad of Johnny”) to haunting slide-guitar atmospherics (“Chasing James Dean”) without losing the sight of his deeply emotive vocals that transform from smoky to sultry, velvety to whiskey-soaked, indie rock to gospel, often times in the same measure.
