WIRE: NEW SINGLE FROM JACCO GARDNER

Pitchfork premieres the first track from 24-year old Dutch multi-instrumentalist Jacco Gardner’s upcoming LP, Cabinet of Curiosities, out via Trouble in Mind on February 12. “The Ballad of Little Jane” is a pastoral baroque pop jaunt, and the sad story it tells is just as sweet as the track’s lilting introduction. Like Nilsson and Davies before him, Gardner uses harpsichord, flutes, and organ to invoke a “simpler times” bygone era. But his delivery isn’t purely quaint old world pop– there’s a digital sheen to his instruments, and beneath the song’s vintage sweetness, there’s a markedly more modern beat.
