Skope: What were you doing when you found out you were selected for Skope A2W April 2010?
Pinprick: Believe it or not, I was setting a Shakespeare sonnet to music. (My own crossbreed of alternative bossa-rock that’s something like João Gilberto playing Nick Drake…) We’re not your conventional rock band, you see. For a start, we’re an electric guitar short… Dead chuffed, by the way, to have been picked for a feature in Skope!
Skope: Now that the weather is nice will you be out playing live this summer & spring & where?
Pinprick: Well, summer is actually over down here in the southern hemisphere and the weather’s turned really NASTY. (You may have seen the flooding in Rio and São Paulo in the news.) Having said that, there are a number of festivals coming up and we hope to play at some of them, including one up in the sunny northeast of Brazil, in Fortaleza. So fingers crossed!
Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
Pinprick: It’s kind of an obsessive-compulsive thing with me. I can’t seem to stop writing new music. It doesn’t necessarily make me want to get up in the morning, though — or do my day job! What makes the band happen, though, are the other two, Valfrid and Lucas. Two more talented, dedicated individuals on the same musical wavelength would be hard to find. Valfrid actually lives and works in São Paulo and comes to Santos once a week specially to rehearse — and next morning he has to get up at 4.30am to go to work! Now that’s dedication!!
Skope: What bands & musicians before you heavily influenced your sound?
Pinprick: I think what makes our sound unique are the vastly different musical backgrounds of the three of us: I’m an English boy who grew up listening to bands like The Cure, Radiohead, Counting Crows and Pearl Jam, which appealed to my angst-ridden youth. Then I started playing percussion instruments at my local samba school (still in England) and got interested in Brazilian popular music and musicians like Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, João Bosco and Lenine (whose music is a fusion of rock and rootsy rhythms from Brazil’s Northeast). Meanwhile, Valfrid and Lucas are two Brazilian boys from hard rock backgrounds, whose influences include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mr Big and Audioslave. The result is a sound that’s hard to put a label: firmly rooted in the ‘alternative rock’ genre, but with a distinctive Brazilian flavour.

Skope: What were you doing when you found out you were selected for Skope A2W April 2010?
The Raverners: We are currently touring, performing our first album „ravenous“ which is out in Switzerland and Germany. We just played at the Montreux Jazz Festival and will do the Blue Balls Festival in Lucerne next week but we have been thrilled to also play a couple of showcases in Munich in Hamburg. Sorry we did not reply earlier, but the euphoria of playing live after having to wait so long has taken up all our time and energy and I’m afraid we have been neglecting our back office a little. Our current single „Ooh Ya Ooh Ya Ooh!“ is also on Swiss Radio DRS3 and German Radio Airplay.
Skope: Now that the weather is nice will you be out playing live this summer & spring & where?
The Raveners: Now that weather is hotter than hot this summer in the whole of Switzerland and Germany we are very much looking forward to play at all festivals that our coming up. We think our radio single „Ooh Ya Ooh Ya Ooh!“ has just the right vibe for this kind of heat wave and temperature.
Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
The Raveners: Good energy within the band. We have mischievous laughs and sometimes we can get into a tiff but we always manage to find peace and we don’t take ourselves that serious after a while of debating in the band room … basically our music and our band THE RAVENERS helps us get up each day and surrender to the fate of a daring musician… It’s not far fetched to say that our fans and the people that support us such as our booking agencies, promoters, record labels and friends and family give us a lot of energy and drive.. Sometimes you might loose faith in yourself and in the future of the band but those „angels of swing ‘n’ rock living on this planet“ always manage to guide us into the right direction and keep us notoriously hungry so we can deliver more appetising sounds that will make us ravenous for more!
Skope: What bands & musicians before you heavily influenced your sound?
The Raveners: Our origins of style and sound is a mix we consider to be called „swing rock“. So a lot comes from the jazzy styles of the thirties but there is a lot of rock influences from bands such as Queens of the Stone Age. Maybe one could say a mix of the later with a twist of Amy Winehouse. We like to use a lot of shaky grooves to give the hips a move. It’s just needs to be a dirty, flirty and sexy.
Skope: What is coming up for you and where can readers learn more about you?
The Raveners: We are sweating out our sounds on the festival stages in Switzerland this summer. Then we are looking forward to yet another little adventure called: „Making of the next Album“! We wish very much to reach not only folks out there in Switzerland and Germany but also all around the Universe. So we better work our bums off real hard again and again. Skope: What were you doing when you found out you were selected for Skope A2W April 2010?
Jared Costa: I was sitting in bed leafing through some lyric notebooks when I decided to take a short break. The choice to slack off clearly paid off when I recieved Skope’s confirmation that I was going to be featured in the mag. I’m really psyched to be part of something that I read and enjoy as music fan myself!
Skope: Now that the weather is nice will you be out playing live this summer & spring & where?
Jared Costa: Absolutely, I will be doing some festivals and gigs. It’s so much better to gig out while the weather is nice. Hauling gear, staying in tune, and generally just not having to brave any elements make for extra incentive to get out and about. I’m in Lancaster, PA for Launch Music Conference on April 15th headlining at Annie Bailey’s for the kick-off night. It’s my 2nd year there and I had a blast last year. I’m also in the process of booking the rest of Spring and Summer right now after just coming back from a nearly 20 city tour that started at the end of February and ended on the last weekend of March.
Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
Jared Costa: Motivation might not even be the right word. I think it’s more of a compulsion. I feel like something is missing if I don’t have the time or opportunity to work on music. I feel like I am constantly inspired to create and write. I even catch myself during sound check sometimes starting to mess with arrangements that I’ve been kicking around! So I am driven to write and create all the time.
Skope: What bands & musicians before you heavily influenced your sound?
Jared Costa: I am influenced by so much music. The stuff that is probably the heaviest though, would be songwriters like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Adam Duritz, Steve Forbert, John Popper, Johnny Cash, Jim Morrison, Cat Stevens, Neil Young, Jim Croce. I am obsessed with other songwriters! I can listen and analyze and characterize countless times over. As far as bands go, I listen to alot again, but these are some that really struck a chord with me: The Band, Smashing Pumpkins, The Doors, The Counting Crows, Blues Traveler and many, many more.
Skope: What is coming up for you and where can readers learn more about you?
Jared Costa: Well, as I said before, I am just coming off of an incredible tour that was a blast! So right now I am booking up for the coming months and taking on requests from venues, festival promoters, and fans. I am also really excited to be working on writing new material for my second album to follow-up “Onwards & Upwards” which I released last year. I am hoping to be in the studio by mid-summer and have a winter release. In the meantime, readers can learn more about me at JaredCosta.com. Skope: What were you doing when you found out you were selected for Skope A2W April 2010?
JM: We were taking our normal morning routine of, coffee, listening to yesterday’s studio work on the monitors and checking email when we came across the good news!
Skope: Now that the weather is nice will you be out playing live this summer & spring & where?
JM: We’re playing the main stage at Jacob’s Ladder Bluegrass Festival in Israel in May ( http://www.jlfestival.com/index.asp ). Its a beautiful venue that is set on the edge of the Sea of Galilee. We played there last year and were invited back. This year we are playing a set with our buddies from HOLLER! a great bluegrass band based out of Israel. It is truly a magical place to be. Also we have a tour scheduled in July in London centered around the Secret Garden Party Festival for art and music (http://new.secretgardenparty.com/2010/ ). While in the UK we are also playing the Bedford and some other venues.
Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
JM: Good question. We live on a farm with 5 dogs and a music studio in our house. It’s a great setting to be recording music. Making music is what we love to do. Having the studio with you all the time takes the pressure off of feeling like you have to get everything done in a specific time frame. We can wake up, have a coffee, walk the dogs and get to work…..or not! You ride the waves of inspiration and sometimes they are fruitful and sometimes you just can’t get anything done. When things aren’t working we take a break, go for a walk, pick a few clementines from the trees….etc. Clementines usually do the trick. Generally, we try our best to keep the pressure off, the discipline on, and let the music flow out when it needs to. But one thing we never, ever, forget is how lucky we are that we get to make music and share it with our friends.
Skope: What bands & musicians before you heavily influenced your sound?
JM: Originally being from New York we could name so many from there that we admire. People like Sasha Dobson, Charlie Burnham, Renee Hart, Erik Lawrence – these are some amazing NYC musicians that you can virtually see all over the LES or the Village or touring in huge venues around the world. Lately we’ve been loving John Lennon’s “Plastic Ono Band” and the new Wilco record. Elliot Smith’s “Basement on the Hill” record is inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time. LOVE “Chaos and Creations in the Backyard” by Paul McCartney. Beck is amazing. We could go on forever! All of these people have influenced our style in some way or another. When it comes to sound, being our own producers and engineers, Li and I try to deliver our music with sincerity and authenticity. If you listen to the records we just mentioned this is what shines about them (in our humble opinion). There are real feelings in those songs from the lyrics, through the music and in the delivery of the sound. This is what we strive for. Hopefully we get that across.
Skope: What is coming up for you and where can readers learn more about you?
JM: Our newest Record “For Our Friends” has us on the road the second half of this year. As we said above, we are touring London in late July. We are planning a tour in the USA and Canada in the early fall and work our way East to West out to California. Being on the road brings us so many new ideas and interesting experiences so we make sure to get on the road as much as possible. We have started working on a new record which will probably be out in the beginning of 2011. Marcus Austin: I was driving on the Dan Ryan Expressway, in my hometown, Chicago, stuck in rush hour traffic.

Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
Marcus Austin: There are three motivating factors that contribute to my music work ethic. One of the main motivating factors is that in creating original music it uplifts my spirits, gives peace and calm in the midst of confusion, and allows an outlet to express life’s emotions. The second motivating factor that inspires me to create is the drive to produce a new sound and innovative creation, “Eleck-tro-Soul”. And last but not least, music is a universal language in which I can reach and speak to the world.
Skope: What bands & musicians before you heavily influenced your sound?
Marcus Austin: Many musical influences and artist have added value to my sound, “Eleck-tro-Soul”. Some of my influences include Kim Burrell, George Clinton and the Parliament, The Gap Band, Bobby Womack, and Gino Vannelli.
Skope: What is coming up for you and where can readers learn more about you?
Marcus Austin: I currently have a free mix-tape, “The Buzz: Heartbreaker” that is currently available to the public off my website, www.marcusjaustin.com. In June 2010, I will be releasing the first couple of singles from my upcoming EP music project, “The Love Inn: You’ve Been Waiting (V.2)”. Additionally, the complete EP project will be released fall 2010. Skope: What were you doing when you found out you were selected for Skope A2W April 2010?
Laura Marie: I was actually getting ready to upload a You Tube video of me singing a song I’d written earlier this week after having a run-in with some political protesters. I usually don’t run into them or write songs about them but the experience shook me and inspired me at the same time.
Skope: Now that the weather is nice will you be out playing live this summer & spring & where?
Laura Marie: I will be playing throughout Texas but will also be back in San Antonio to host my second annual Summer Songwriter’s Series at Candlelight Coffeehouse. It starts on Wed. June 23rd and takes place every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month until September.
Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
Laura Marie: I love writing. When I’m inspired to write there is absolutely no stopping me. I tune everything else out. And, if I’m not inspired to write at any given moment, I’m motivated by my determination to share what I’ve written with as many willing listeners as possible. I’m so grateful for the internet.

Reggie MaGee: First I want to thank Skope Magazine for the interview… I was sitting at the desk of my day job looking at my emails when I got one from Skope. I must say that I was absolutely thrilled!
Skope: Now that the weather is nice will you be out playing live this summer & spring & where?
Reggie MaGee: As a matter of fact I will be in Forest City, NC on May 8th at the IPraise festival with a number of other Christian artists. I will also try to hit a couple more places while in the Forest City area. I will also be doing a PodCast in June, and there is something in the works for Long Island in the very near future.
Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
Reggie MaGee: Great question… Music is part of the very core of who I am. Not just one genre of music, I am in love with any form of music that just works. How do I know it works? If the artist can touch my soul, I am with it. The feeling of creating music is something that is indescribable! When it all comes together and you are able to pinpoint the idea lyrically and musically there is no other feeling like it! That is my motivation-to write songs that communicate on a deeper plain than just a nice beat.
Skope: What bands & musicians before you heavily influenced your sound?
Reggie MaGee: Wow!… There are so many, but I must give homage to the main ones. On the gospel side of things I would say Walter and Edwin Hawkins, and Andre Crouch, historically, for their musical excellence, and the late Keith Green for his depth of lyrical expression. On today’s music scene I would have to say people like Kirk Franklin, and Deitrick Haddon are certainly inspirational. On the secular side of things it spans from Stevie Wonder, George Duke and Maurice White of EWF to Rascal Flatts who can flat out sing… My musical tastes are very broad as you might see.
Skope: What is coming up for you and where can readers learn more about you?
Reggie MaGee: I am presently making my rounds on the internet, establishing myself and creating a fan base as an independent artist. I am also looking to get as many dates as I can this summer to promote my latest release entitled “Pressing On”, which can be found on Itunes, Amazon music, Rhapsody, CDbaby and Napster.com. Burnt Matches: I was just getting ready for my band to come to my house to relax together before our shows tonight and tomorrow in Santa Barbara at Sand Bar and in Santa Monica at O’Briens.

Burnt Matches: I grew up listening mainly to 60’s music and grunge. From bands that range from Hendrix and Zeppelin to Nirvana, Sublime and Frank Sinatra.

evilpretty: Of course! We have several gigs scheduled in May & June in Daytona Beach, Jacksonville and Orlando, Florida. Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
evilpretty: Creativity is a necessity for us. If we are not consistently creating and improving our sound, song-writing, playing live, and recording, we are MISERABLE! Music is our cathartic outlet, and we strive to create original music for the thirsty ear! Basically, evilpretty and our four members are extremely passionate about our art, and hugely appreciate the immense positive response we have received for our short 2 years together thus far. Or recent debut release “You Are You” has been met with great response in the short time out, which further drives us to create more!
Skope: What bands & musicians before you heavily influenced your sound?
evilpretty: Each of our members have a vast array of musical influences…from Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Indie, Reggae, Emo, Classic Rock, and even Classical. Although an understandable question or request, we try not to compare ourselves or sound like anyone else…we prefer to be as original as we can while maintaining a solid, groove-oriented hard rock sound that still can be enjoyed by a wide audience. The individual band members influences range from the Beatles, Metallica, Pantera, Chevelle, Guns & Roses, Rush, Incubus, Radiohead, Queens of the Stone Age, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and another hundred we don’t have room for here! Good music is good music, and shouldn’t have to be pigeonholed into a genre.
Skope: What is coming up for you and where can readers learn more about you?
evilpretty: We are filling up our Southeast schedule quickly and are currently planning our first mini-tour of the Southeast very soon. evilpretty is also currently speaking with a few labels and management companies, so there may be big happenings for us on the near horizon! We also hope to win a slot on the Orlando date for this summer’s WARP Tour, which would be a huge chance to spread our music to a larger audience. There also is a big interest in evilpretty in the Southwest, so we may be journeying out there soon as well. Rob Carlton: I was right in the middle of writing a awesome new song and hearing the news excited me even more!

Rob Carlton: Yes as the weather gets nicer I’ll be playing more places. First up May 11th in NYC at the National Underground at 159 east houston street. It’s a club owned by Gavin Degraw. Other gigs include a gig in pa mall for the youth and we have interest from the Mayfest in Chicago may 21-24.
Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
Rob Carlton: I have to say the passion I have for music and to create music on the guitar that lifts my spirits and hopefully others to a higher level.
Skope: What bands & musicians before you heavily influenced your sound?
Rob Carlton: Jimi Hendrix with his flash as a live performer and Eric Clapton for his rock-blues style.

Rob Carlton: I have so much going on! Skope: What were you doing when you found out you were selected for Skope A2W April 2010?
Liam Biggs: I was in the middle of my morning coffee.
Skope: Now that the weather is nice will you be out playing live this summer & spring & where?
Liam Biggs: I will be in the U.K in august for a smaller tour. In july i believe there will be a cross Canada tour as well. Dates will be announced very soon
Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
Liam Biggs: My 2 year old daughter is a huge motivator druing the beat making process, i generally write to what she dances to. There are other motivators though, one being i’ve always felt hip hop was created for a party and a good time, so i try and create what will bob heads, move feet and overall make u feel good.
Skope: What bands & musicians before you heavily influenced your sound?
Liam Biggs: Atmosphere and pretty much the whole rhymesayers camp, i also love jazz, Van Morrison, eric Clapton, oh and the entire Wu-Tang Clan.
Skope: What is coming up for you and where can readers learn more about you?

Skope: What were you doing when you found out you were selected for Skope A2W April 2010?
Amoric: We were in our home studio recording demos, when during one of the breaks we checked our e-mail and were delighted to receive the news.
Skope: Now that the weather is nice will you be out playing live this summer & spring & where?
Amoric: Our gig schedule always gets busier during the spring/summer season, but one gig we’re looking forward to is playing the main stage at Solfest 2010 in the UK on the 27th August (http://www.solwayfestival.co.uk)
Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
Amoric: The two things that motivate us the most are our everyday experiences and, of course, other people’s music and their view on life and its peculiarities.
Skope: What bands & musicians before you heavily influenced your sound?
Amoric: The biggest influence for us has to be U2, they’re a band we’ve been inspired by for decades now. Also on our heroes list : Foo Fighters, Muse, The Police, Depeche Mode and so many other great bands and artists, that probably won’t fit on this whole page :)
Skope: What is coming up for you and where can readers learn more about you?

Skope: What were you doing when you found out you were selected for Skope A2W April 2010?
Jetphynx: I just got picked up from the airport heading to Toronto Alternative Fashion Week, checking emails on my backflip. I was with my camera crew and Brawdway, we already were popping bottles of champaign, we just had even more of a reason to toast!
Skope: Now that the weather is nice will you be out playing live this summer & spring & where?
Jetphynx: The show goes on through any weather. You will always get an energy packed, slightly vulgar, outrageous performance from me, NOMATTER WHAT. I will be performing outdoors at Milwaukee Pride Festival in June, and many festivals throughout Europe in July – August.
Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
Jetphynx: When my father passed of throat cancer, he said to me “ The world did not get to hear me, make sure they hear you”. Ever since then, I took on the promise to be the voice of my father. Motivation is a staple in my career, I feel anything less is a lie.
Skope: What bands & musicians before you heavily influenced your sound?
Jetphynx: My father was big on Jazz music, and traveled the world. We used to play this game where he would play a record and spread out different album covers. I had to guess which artist I thought the record belonged to. I grew up to Guns N Roses, Prince, Jay-Z, even MF Doom.
Skope: What is coming up for you and where can readers learn more about you?
Jetphynx: I am releasing my debut album “The Art” this summer. My buzz-worthy record “S.T.S.” is available on itunes now! Loads of shows, fashion, and special appearances. Skope: What were you doing when you found out you were selected for Skope A2W April 2010?
Lisha Cash: When I found out I was selected for Skope A2W I was at my office job checking my emails.
Skope: Now that the weather is nice will you be out playing live this summer & spring & where?
Lisha Cash: My hopes are to be playing live in different venus in Toronto. I expect there to be a show at Jack Astor’s in Scarborough because I’ve had a few there in the past. I also expect to have some in a few different local pubs.
Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
Lisha Cash: I am in love with composing and recording. It has been a part of my life since I was really young and every single day I am more in love with music. I love to see people’s reactions to my music and watching people enjoy it, that’s really motivating.
Skope: What bands & musicians before you heavily influenced your sound?
Lisha Cash: I’d say Avril Lavigne has definately influenced my sound. I love her style and I really appreciate her songwriting abilities. I didn’t purposely migrate towards her sound, it’s just the way I write as well.
Skope: What is coming up for you and where can readers learn more about you?
Lisha Cash: I am promoting my new songs Stupid Boy and Ex-girlfriend as much as possible. I am also going to start recording my next song in early May.
