Everyone knows that when Vermont singer-songwriters cover classic Motown singles, there is really no sense in trying to do it with more soul. Jer Coons certainly had this in mind when he chose to record the Jackson 5’s, “I Want You Back” as a tribute following the untimely death of their lead singer.
The Jackson’s 1969 number one single (produced by Motown’s legendary “Corporation”) features a walking bass line, funky electric guitars, bongos, a string section and Michael’s stunning eleven year old vocals; none of which Coons’ tries to replicate.
