Mathematics. Russian Literature. Psychology. San Diego-based songwriter Anya Marina grew up around academic ephemera and subjects that, fair or not, aren’t exactly famous for fostering creativity, or launching pop music careers.
But despite the odds, and a pair of professor parents, Marina would go on to embrace music with all the fervor and intensity with which her progenitors hugged calculators, dusty screeds by Nabokov, and Pavlovian studies. The result is a self-assured, smart pop sensibility that takes cues from a world of influence while remaining firmly grounded in the sun-kissed tropes of Cali folk.
