After a decade away from the spotlight, Jimmy Scott Free returns with the evocative new single “Turn Back Time” featuring the late house legend Kim English, in a bold reintroduction to the UK music scene. A soulful and euphoric dance track that bridges nostalgia with renewal, the single marks a new era for the Southend-born artist, now based between the Midlands and Barcelona.
A familiar name on the underground scene in the 2000s, Jimmy rose through the ranks promoting nights from age 15, eventually forming a live dance act with his brother — complete with a self-built reggae-style sound system. The band played alongside acts like Peter Hook and The Light, Groove Armada, and Skunk Anansie, even winning Best Dance Track at the Exposure Music Awards in 2010.
But after years of grind and a series of disillusioning industry experiences, Jimmy left it all behind and moved to Spain. “When my brother left the band, I lost my heart for music,” he admits. “But when a friend visited last year and convinced me to plug in the studio again, I haven’t stopped writing since.”
Now recharged, Jimmy is back with purpose: to make radio-ready, soul-stirring dance music that carries the same raw energy he once poured into packed live shows. “Turn Back Time” is the first in a series of releases that will culminate in a full album — and potentially a new live show, this time with proper label backing.
While the sound may be refined, Jimmy’s spirit remains as independent and genuine as ever. With a past that includes building his own scene from the ground up, surviving a gas explosion in Amsterdam at age 21, and even being wrongfully arrested at a London gig (later cleared in court), he’s no stranger to adversity — or to transformation.
“This is a new chapter, but the fire’s still the same. I’m doing this on my own terms, but with a lot more focus this time around,” says Jimmy.
A simple music video is in the works, and behind-the-scenes studio footage may follow to document the new journey.
