Acid alliteration and melted psychedelic rock adorn Strange New World’s aptly named “Escape.” Instrumentation goes for an expansive approach, ensuring each detail reverberates within the vast space. Her voice has a hypnotic quality, lulling the listener into a sense of peace. Like some off-kilter series of lullabies, the narratives that form feel like they draw from the equally unusual verses of Syd Barrett at the height of his powers. Nor is Strange New World alone in their spacious sound – they go for this ability to draw from the sweetness of Jessica Pratt’s beautiful “Here In The Pitch.”
The guitar work is fragile and delicate with the incredible opener and title track, “Escape.” “Never Going Back” has a spring in its step. The keyboards go for a golden AM pop pleasure, and the bass lingers on throughout the whole work, allowing it a tremendous emotional impact. Purely stripped down to the essentials is the Bossa Nova leanings of “Today,” where a romantic sentiment unspools with easygoing splendor. Hushed whispers whip through the fleeting glimpses of “Still Life” as the acoustic guitar adds to the sense of intimacy that ties the piece together. Effortlessly pulling together everything that came before it is the gorgeousness and grandeur of the peaceful “Clarity.” By far, the album’s highlight, “Clarity,” feels like a song that Weyes Blood wishes she wrote.

Strange New World floats on with the surreal scope of “Escape,” with lyrics that feel like they were plucked right out of a daydream.
