Ottawa-based Americana singer-songwriter Lynne Hanson has just released a gorgeous and lyrically rich new album, “Just A Poet.” Hanson recently sat down with @skopemag to talk about this wonderful collection of songs.
@skopemag: Tell us about the process of putting this amazing album together.
Lynne: It was a pleasure to head back into the studio with producer Jim Bryson. Jim produced my 2020 release, “Just Words.” He does a great job of adding an indie sensibility to my songs. It’s fun getting to the mixing stage and seeing the progress from laying down the beds to having a complete record that’s almost ready for the world to hear.
@skopemag: Do you have a favorite song on the album?
Lynne: I like “Outlaw Lover.” I wrote it on acoustic guitar with a very different feel. Jim established a swampy groove, and the fuzz guitar solo really brought things to a next level. One of the best things is seeing how a song blossoms when the session musicians start adding their talents to the mix.
@skopemag: How did you come up with your album title?
Lynne: I’ve been called a “heartbreak poet,” and I liked the idea of having the word “poet” in the album title. The song “Just A Poet” cuts closest to the bone, and it’s probably the most “about me” song on this record.
@skopemag: What is the overall message of the album?
Lynne: I try to write songs that people can see themselves in. Whether it’s about heartache, self-love, or adventure, I want the listener to close their eyes and lose themselves in the three-and-a-half-minute movies that are the songs on this record. While I’m a lover of words, we’ve tried to wrap the lyrics in catchy melodies and groove for when listeners want to let the music wash over them.
@skopemag: Any tour plans?
Lynne Hanson: We will be in Ontario, the East Coast of Canada, and the United States this summer. We’re always adding tour dates, so the best thing people can do is visit my website to see if we’ll be coming to their town.
