The companies surveyed were large-scale operations, with each boasting an annual revenue of $1 billion or more. The interviewees included business leaders such as CEOs, COOs, line of business managers, and marketing heads, as well as IT and technology leaders.
The Pace and Success of Digital Transformation Services
The results revealed that companies are at different stages of their digital transformation journey, with varying degrees of success. Some companies are at the forefront, transforming various aspects of their organizations, while others are just beginning to understand the basics. There were also a few that faced organizational or other challenges that hindered their digital transformation efforts.
However, what stood out was the fact that the most successful companies – referred to as ‘Digirati’ – have effectively combined their digital initiatives with strong leadership. This combination led to a successful transformation of technology into a transformative business tool, a process termed as ‘Digital Maturity’. The level of digital maturity varies among companies, but it is observed that those with higher maturity levels tend to outperform their peers.
To lead the change towards digital transformation services, managers need to have a clear vision of how they want to transform their organizations to thrive in a digital world. Analysis of the interviews revealed a clear pattern. Executives are focusing their digital transformation efforts on three crucial areas of their businesses – customer experience, operational processes, and business models. Each of these areas has three distinct elements that are undergoing transformation, forming a set of nine key components of digital transformation.
Interestingly, none of the companies surveyed have managed to fully transform all nine elements.
