Channelling the eccentricity of Injury Reserve and Jockstrap, on ‘Ward 52’ dust present a more insular purview of their experiences, in contrast to ‘The Gutter’s furious commentary on class division and socio-cultural power imbalances. The out-of-body experience of being confronted with your own mortality is captured here through shrieking saxophone, throbbing bass and erratic percussion. In ‘Ward 52’, dust attempt to make sense of that mind-state, from the daily consideration of your physical ability to complete what was otherwise second nature – basic human function – against the often invisible, cerebral combat of pushing past fear.

The band explore this idea providing an ironic social commentary on the idea. The accompanying music video illustrates this through interrupting images and clips throughout a rocking performance by the band.

Tariq says the meaning behind her new track is “based on the point-of-view shift of, ‘don’t be sad it’s gone, be grateful it happened,’ and I wanted the sonic movements to represent that. I produced and visually created everything, which is a beautiful way to execute a concept, because there’s no artistic compromise, as opposed to working collaboratively with others. I’m loving how much I learn about production with every song I make. For example, I never thought I would use a horn sample, but this song really would be empty without it, and it’s also a reminder that songs tend to write themselves and find their own way as they grow.” “Perspective” is out now on Equity Distribution.
