“Soul white boy nerdy disco dance house fun party time music.” No, you haven’t walked into one of those annoying Bing commercials where Americans have become search engine casualties, Google-drunk automatons, adrift in a sea of signifiers.
No, this is the description Tiombe — principal member of downtown acid-soaked space-house soul-searchers Cubic Zirconia — uses to affix to her band. “We don’t really do genres” would have also sufficed. Because throw as many adjectives at the wall and few stick for more than a moment or two. On their dirty-mouthed salvo “Fuck Work,” Tiombe and the rest of the band — former Glassjaw member Todd Weinstock, and his erstwhile Men Women and Children bandmate Nick Hook — manage to sound like everything and nothing, an interstellar Johnny Paycheck, dolled up in lipstick and disco indulgence, telling every employer out there to “take this job and shove it.” It comes at perhaps the best time, as all of us have been laid the fuck off. We here at the MuseBox can think of no better soundtrack to this summer’s slow burn of financial apocalypse.
