Bluegrass and, to a lesser extent, folk music are inextricably woven into Tennessean Jim Hurst’s musical DNA. The guitarist, singer, and general force of nature within bluegrass circles has enjoyed a two decades-plus long run as one of the most well-respected musicians in that style. His new single, “One More Lonesome Train”, travels through familiar musical and thematic territory, especially for longtime genre devotees. Hurst continues bringing the same unexpected yet celebrated individuality to the song that marks the best of his prior releases. It isn’t merely a variation on a theme but, instead, an intensely personal statement that casts its net wide. The song’s appeal should be widespread.
It has an assertive stride that swoops us away from the outset, Acoustic guitar leads the way and dominates much of the instrumental spotlight. However, the banjo plays a key supporting role in the arrangement. It provides a rhythmic foundation moving below the guitar and fleshes the song out into a fuller listening experience. There are ample opportunities for Hurst’s musicianship to stand out. They are never built into the arrangements in such an ostentatious way that they attempt to steal the song’s thunder. They bring further melodic distinction to an already memorable performance.

Hurst’s ability to carry the song vocally and benefit from the presence of a second voice is welcome. His unshakable gift for delivering convincing singing in either mode is a professional high point, but attentive listeners may hear a classic lonesome cry in his phrasing. It’s understated, but it’s there. Hurst is a canny singer capable of filling the seemingly simplest of lines with worlds of emotion. “One More Lonesome Train” is an excellent example of how Hurst adopts a well-known format, rejuvenates it with his musical spark, and successfully pours old wine into new bottles for a modern audience.
It’s a tune that longtime genre admirers or casual fans alike can enjoy. It’s another bonus of Hurst’s work. He doesn’t render bluegrass or other roots styles in an exclusionary, cliquish fashion. This is music from the heart, for the heart, and keeps a wide tent. Performing music with such a traditionalist slant in these modern times demands a certain amount of chutzpah. However, Hurst’s music never comes across as unduly cocky or strident.
He sounds like a musician driven by a deep inner urge to perform.
Qualities such as this are solid building blocks for a long career. Hurst has distinguished himself for many years, and “One More Lonesome Train” shows that he’s far from finished. The Tennessee-born musical artist continues getting better at a time and place in life when his contemporaries are all too often settling into middle-age obsolescence. Not so for Hurst. He doesn’t have anything to prove, but his latest single, “One More Lonesome Train”, glows with the steady light of inspiration. He was born to do this, and that mandate continues informing each new song. It is a stylish and classy work of effortless authenticity that scores of listeners will enjoy.
