From A Fountain originally started in Philadelphia where Kirby played in the band National Eye, collaborating with a crew of local musicians, including members of Dr. Dog, The Spinto Band and others. In 2010 From A Fountain released their debut, Shale and Sandstone on Park the Van Records. After a decade though, Kirby felt the need to get away, so he headed home to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, rented a massive warehouse space in the winter and set up his recording gear. Inviting friends over, Kirby wrote and recorded a couple dozen songs, inspired by all the imagery that surrounded him as a child. When spring approached, he headed to Joshua Tree then up the coast to Bolinas, CA to finish the project, which was mixed by Nick Krill of Spinto Band and mastered by JJ Golden (New Pornographers/Calexico).
