Henrietta Defreitas is a London-based performer with a love for 80s music and a résumé beginning in the late-90s, when she was backing singer for the jazz-funk outfit Khush.
Since that group’s split, she has focused more on composition. Now comes the single, “I Wanna Know,” which fuses the jazz & funk genres that have long captured her heart.
The track begins with smooth piano in the background, along with some subtle jazz. Then Henrietta’s vocals take the forefront. Hers is a highly pleasing voice that stirs up a sensual mood, perhaps even one with an herbal component.
Her voice sporadically touches on high notes that kiss the ears like some beguiling and beautiful siren-like creature:
“I wanna know / I gotta know / Where did it go”
Something has been lost? The lyrics aren’t explicitly romantic, but you can’t help but think of a once promising romance gone sour (hopefully that’s not shortness of imagination on the reviewer’s part!).
There is a trace of nihilism: “Nobody gives a damn about the future”
Also some regret: “Can we erase, can we erase…Where did it go wrong?”
And some soul-searching: “who has the answers?”
Henrietta aims to produce some dance and rock tracks in the future, possibly even some cover songs of such UK legends as The Beatles and The Who. There is also the prospect of a musical, as she is passionate about the theatre.
