It’s always a pretty big deal when an artist gets his first big break. There are many ways to get discovered. In Kid Cudi’s case, he was lucky enough to bump into Kanye West.
“I met Kanye like any other person as a fan, oh at Virgin Music store, I was looking at CDs that I couldn’t buy (laughs). He was standing right next to me looking at CDs and I remember just going ‘how you doing? My name is Cudi’ well actually I said my name was Scott because I wasn’t Kid Cudi yet, ‘I’m Scott man, I’m from Cleveland, Ohio.’ And I remember him being like ‘Ay man I’m a call you right back.’ Like getting off his phone and I was just like ‘I really wanna be signed, can you sign me’ like I had no pitch! ‘Can you just sign me?’”
And what did ‘Ye have to say to that?
“And he was like ‘Man, I got a lot so many artists right now that I’m tryna deal with right now and unless you on some Tupac or Biggie type stuff’ and I was like ‘Nah, nah I’m not that good but I have the potential for greatness.’”
Kid Cudi is currently signed with Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music label and Universal Motown. Cudi is still working on his debut album, Man on the Moon: The Guardians, which will feature his hit single, “Day ‘N’ Nite.”
