- NORTH SEA JAZZ CRUISE LAUNCHES WITH SOUTH AFRICAN CONNECTIONS
Jul 5, 2008
The North Sea Jazz Festival, one of the highlights on the international jazz event calendar, will launch the inaugural North Sea Jazz Cruise on July 5.
Jazz lovers who want to add special edge to the festival experience will board the world-class Holland America ocean liner ‘Rotterdam’ in Copenhagen with ports of call in Warnemunde / Berlin, Germany; Gotenburg, Sweden; Oslo, Norway; and Hamburg-Elbe River in Germany. The Oslo fjord and the Elbe River are some of the sightseeing highlights. The luxury liner will then dock in Rotterdam and serve as a “floating hotel” for the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival, July 13-17.
Cruise guests will receive a special VIP festival package which includes tickets for the festival, VIP entrance privileges (no waiting in line) as well as special onboard performances while in harbour.
Timeless Destinations has been appointed as managing travel partner for Jazz Cruises LLC, the world’s foremost producer of full-charter luxury jazz cruises.
Timeless Destinations of Miami Florida is a specialized tour and travel company, owned by former South Africans, who have appointed Henry Shields and Alan Chiat of Music Makers-South Africa as Marketing Ambassadors.
Shields says: “This is the most innovative and attractive jazz product I have seen in years. The idea of cruising up the Oslo Fjord on one of the worlds finest cruise liners, while hearing the best contemporary jazz artists in a perfect setting, is about as good as it gets in the way of international jazz offerings”.
Hosting and serving as artistic director is Grammy winning award winning bassist, composer and producer Marcus Miller, who is assembling a great lineup of musicians for this unique and spectacular cruise. These include Herbie Hancock, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Roy Hargrove, Roberta Gambarini, David Sanborn, James Carter and McCoy Tyner.
Cape Town music producers, Shields & Chiat, have secured a block booking at special inaugural prices. Shields advises: “Until now, Jazz Cruises LLC have mainly operated in the Caribbean. These cruises were the best-kept secret because most of the bookings were repeat business. A few South Africans, such as jazz journalist Don Albert, have experienced these cruises and observed that many people book for subsequent cruises while still onboard the ship. Due to the increased number of cruises, the expansion to Europe, and the fortunate connection with South African tour experts in Miami, we hope that many more South Africans will enjoy this experience.”

- MYSPACE SECRET SHOWS PRESENTS DRAGONFORCE IN SEATTLE
Jul 6, 2008
MySpace Secret Shows is proud to announce that heavy metal band DragonForce will make a rare club show appearance in Seattle at El Corazon on Sunday, July 6 at 7 PM. England's most revered new metal band will be releasing their new album Ultra Beatdown on August 26 on Roadrunner Records. The Secret Show is a free, exclusive performance for the MySpace community.
Ultra Beatdown was named one of the most anticipated albums of 2008 by Revolver. The album is an epic, sweeping, grand collection of infectious guitar anthems that'll inspire all who listen to either pump their fists in the air or pick up a guitar, whether it be real or virtual. DragonForce's single from 2006's Inhuman Rampage, "Through The Fire and Flames," exploded on the public beyond the metal world thanks to its appearance on the massively popular Guitar Hero III. The single has been RIAA certified Gold in the US, with the album scanning over 300,000 copies (and counting) to date. The New York Times said of DragonForce, "The band has found a way to make metalheads smile." Following the Secret Show, the band will be one of the headliners of the Mayhem Festival, alongside acts such as Slipknot and Disturbed.
MySpace Music has organized more than 150 Secret Shows since the franchise launched in February 2006 with artists like Gnarls Barkley, Neil Diamond, Slayer, Fran Ferdinand, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs performing in cities around the world. Sutka Productions International, Inc. will be on board to transform the Simmons' backyard into a summer dreamland. "The theme 'Midsummer Night's Dream' brought inspiration and made me think how a creative interpretation of a dream could fuse imagination, fantasy and nature...in my minds eye, I envisioned a world where everything seemed of gigantic scale...a place where statues come to life and where adults turned into children once more for just one evening."- Bruce Sutka, Founder and Creative Director Sutka International, Inc.
The gala will also once again bring together some of fashion's top designers to donate violet garments and accessories for the auction. These dazzling items will all be found in the magical "Dream Closet". Inside the purple wardrobe, guests will find beautiful frocks, jewels and gems from A-level fashion designers. Last year's "Yellow Wardrobe" drew the support of celebrity jewelers including Lorraine Schwartz and Jeri Cohen; and clothing designers Rachel Roy, B. Michael and Giuseppe Zanotti, just to name a few.
Also special to the ART FOR LIFE gala is each year's featured artist. This year's artist is abstract painter Ed Clark. Clark will donate an original piece. Platinum Easel Table patrons will receive signed limited edition Ed Clark print. Clark's work has drawn accolades internationally for five decades. He is probably best known for using shaped canvas, utilizing this in a piece exhibited at the Brata gallery, New York City, in 1957, generally considered to be the first of its kind. Clark's work can also be found in museums around the world including The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, The Detroit Art Institute, Detroit, MI., Centro de Arte Moderno, Guadalajara, Mexico, The California Afro-American Museum, Los Angeles, CA., Museum Solidarity, Titagrad, Yugoslavia, and The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY.
Each year, three youth groups are also selected as the event's Featured Beneficiaries. This year's beneficiaries include Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, who offer visual, performing and literary arts, arts education and artists' programs, Marquis Studios, who inspire a passion for learning by bringing the arts into schools, and STREB, a youth focused dance studio. - 2008 Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards induction ceremony - NYC

- INTERNATIONAL POP OVERTHROW
Jul 25, 2008
The Lineup and Venues Will Be Announced Shortly for IPO’s Upcoming Stop In Its Original Home Of Los Angeles July 25-August 9
International Pop Overthrow, the planet’s ultimate pop/rock music festival, rocked the world famous Cavern Club in Liverpool for the sixth year in a row, with a total of 175 bands from 16 countries performing in the hallowed venue where The Beatles first met Brian Epstein and ultimately played 292 shows. The massive turnout of live performances made this IPO’s most successful showing in Liverpool to date.
Reflective of the festival’s ongoing triumph in the historic room, IPO is prominently featured in the just released book “The Cavern: The Most Famous Club In The World” by noted historian and BBC Merseyside host Spencer Leigh.
Attendees were ecstatic throughout the weeklong event, which ran from May 20-26. Richard Stephenson of the Leeds-based band The Avenues, which played the festival, called it the “best weekend of my life!” Will of Comporto Sound added, “Having sound engineered for 45 bands over three days, I am absolutely flabbergasted that 44 of them were mindblowingly shit-hot!”
These artists included a handful of exciting up and coming groups from Los Angeles:
The Cherry Bluestorms, a psychedelic pop band featuring guitarist Glen Laughlin, also of The Dickies; Blackout101, an explosive teen trio comprised of two 13 year olds and a 16 year old that has been touted as next Green Day or Blink 182; Ari Shine, an artist The Los Angeles Times has described as a “songwriter-to-watch in the L.A. power-pop underground”; and Norman Kelsey, the former frontman of power-poppers Bat Country, who has totally re-invented himself as a soul man, and will appeal to fans of Marvin Gaye and Earth, Wind & Fire.
Other breakthrough artists who appeared at IPO Liverpool 2008 include Nigel Clark, the lead singer/songwriter of Dodgy, who scored several hits in the UK during the 90s and who have recently reformed; Hamfatter, a band from Cambridge, whose first single “Sziget” from their critically acclaimed third album What Part of Hamfatter Do You Not Understand? reached #54 in the UK singles chart and #13 in the indie singles chart in July 2007; Daisy, a band from Turku, Finland, whose recently released album It’s About Time, hit #22 on the Finnish Top 40 charts (their single “Go” will be featured on this year’s IPO Compilation CD); and Detlef Zoo, a Latvian band whose single “Four Walls” spent five weeks at the #1 spot on Latvia’s radio SWH charts.
Fans across the world that couldn’t make it out to the Cavern Club have other options thanks to all the new cities on IPO’s burgeoning schedule. In February, the event took over Atlanta (February 13-16) and Chapel Hill, North Carolina (21-24). Its first stops in Detroit (April 9-12) and Milwaukee (May 1-4) sandwiched a marathon run in Chicago April 15-27. Before overthrowing the pop scene in Portland, Oregon for the first time from August 20-23, IPO will return to its roots in Los Angeles (July 25-August 9) and then head up to San Francisco (August 12-16).
The lineup and venues for IPO’s run in L.A. will be announced shortly.
IPO is also scheduled for Vancouver August 26-30, with dates to be announced for November shows in Boston, New York and Toronto. Festival creator and promoter David Bash now has his eyes set on expanding the event’s global reach and in coming years hopes to “set up shop” in cities like Stockholm, Madrid, Tokyo and Sydney.
Each IPO event features between 100-180 of the best pop bands from around the world. Expanding on Bash’s founding vision to unite a worldwide pop scene under one umbrella, the fest has quickly grown beyond its roots as a showcase for melodic pop bands and now invites artists from a wide variety of subgenres: indie pop, folk pop, garage pop, punk pop, psychedelic pop, modern rock.

- Beautiful Burnout ArtJam The Art of Underworld
Aug 1, 2008
“Beautiful Burnout” is an astonishing track from Underworld’s 2007 album Oblivion with Bells. It is also the title of the multi-media exhibition on view at Jacobson Howard Gallery during the All Points West Music and Arts Festival running from August 1 to 15.
The New York Art Jam will produce an intoxicating confluence of graceful macro-photography, compelling videos and film, lush and mesmerizing sound, layered collages of street snapshots and a poetic diary of painting, images and text. Underworld will be playing live at the All Points West Music and Arts Festival on August 8.
Underworld and Tomato, the visual Beautiful Burnout, 2008, handmade silkscreen on art collaborative, is a UK-born genre-defying force consisting of, among others, Karl Hyde, Rick Smith, Simon Taylor (tomato) and John Warwicker (tomato). Their Oblivion Ball ArtJam in Tokyo last November (the all night, multi-band jam that, with the help of 20 assistants and in the spirit of “happening” godfather Allan Kaprow, saw the design and painting of a 42.5 meter long and 7 meter high wall in just sixteen hours). The exhibition at Jacobson Howard will be the same ongoing process in multi-media form.
“We’ve always been asked "where is the edge of Underworld and where is the edge of Tomato?" as if it needs to be conventionally 'boxed'". For us, it's just our daily process of making things in whatever medium is at hand. Beautiful Burnout is the dynamic expression of this process”. (John Warwicker, Underworld Creative Director & Tomato Co-Founder)
The All Points West Music & Arts Festival at Liberty State Park runs from August 8-10 with Underworld performing Friday August 8, and also at the Virgin Festival in Baltimore on the 9th.
Gallery hours: 10-6, closed Sunday.
- Spiegelworld 2008 - Music Schedule Announced
Aug 6, 2008
Spiegelworld Impresario Ross Mollison today announced that Spiegelworld will return to Pier 17 on the South Street Seaport for its third annual Summer carnival, running from August 6 - November 2nd 2008. Once again, Spiegelworld will deliver a non-stop program of ground-breaking theater, intimate concerts, brazen burlesque, the city’s top DJs and superb dining, and dancing under the stars, all at the one stunning waterfront location.
The festivities start off with cabaret diva Meow Meow & Tony Award winning performer, Justin Bond followed by Amanda Palmer of the "Brechtian punk cabaret" duo The Dresden Dolls, brings her electrifying solo repertoire in a reprise of her legendary Spiegeltent engagements across Europe and in celebration of her forthcoming album, “Who Killed Amanda Palmer” produced by Ben Folds.
Spiegelworld is also pleased to host the North American launch of the highly anticipated Headphone Disco this summer, direct from Europe. “Imagine two DJs, two separate channels on wireless headphones, 1,000 people dancing, and absolutely no sound apart from the crowd singing along,” noted Mollison. “It’s hilarious to watch and fantastically fun to participate in.”
- Tracy Stefans LIVE!
Aug 7, 2008
August 7, 2008 3:00P
Budweiser Pavillion - Wisconsin State Fair, West Allis, Wisconsin - THE POLICE HELPING OUT PUBLIC TV
Aug 7, 2008
The Police will play their final show at Madison Square Garden on August 7th and proceeds from the event will benefit public television. The band has made a deal with New York’s public TV stations WNET and WLIW, making their last gig ever a giant fundraiser for the networks. The New York Times reports that on June 14th, there will be a one-day pledge drive on the channels, which boasts interviews with Sting, as well as archival concert footage. Of course, they won’t be giving out mugs or umbrellas as gifts in exchange for donations, rather viewers will have a chance to score tickets to the event. A five-thousand dollar pledge gets the donor the VIP treatment – tickets, dinner, a party and attendance to sound check, while a 150 dollar donation secures a pair of tickets. Sting and guitarist Andy Summers grew up in England watching the BBC and, according to their manager, both have an affinity for “television that is untainted by commercialism.”

- THISDAY\'S \"AFRICA RISING\" FESTIVAL - STAR STUDDED MUSIC AND FASHION EVENT
Aug 23, 2008
THISDAY'S "AFRICA RISING" FESTIVAL MAKES U.S. DEBUT AT KENNEDY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, FRIDAY, AUGUST 1, TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR AFRICAN ISSUES
STAR-STUDDED MUSIC AND FASHION EVENT TO FEATURE RECORDING ARTIST SEAL, MODEL TYSON BECKFORD AND MORE
A popular international music and fashion festival designed to showcase the positive elements and major improvements across the African continent will make its U.S. debut later this summer.
THISDAY, Africa's leading daily newspaper and multi-media resource, has boldly revolutionized the means through which awareness for African issues is generated through the creation of its third annual star-studded music and fashion event. Themed 'Africa Rising,' this year's festival will focus on finding "sustainable solutions" rather than simply identifying the "problems" facing Africa. Following the overwhelming success of the festival - which performed in Africa over the past two years and is making its UK debut this year - Nigerian media mogul Nduka Obaigbena has now exported his brainchild event across the Atlantic. On The heels of two July events in Nigeria, the U.S. show will unfold on Friday, August 1 at the Kennedy Center For The Performing Arts in downtown Washington, DC. With a star-studded lineup of performing artists and stars, this world-class festival is designed to communicate positive images of Africa by showcasing the renaissance of Africa's music, fashion and the arts. The continent's culture will be on full display as patrons will live the true African experience.
Confirmed headliners for the Kennedy Center event include Grammy Award winning recording artist Seal along with American supermodel Tyson Beckford. Additional A-list performers will be announced shortly for the only North American stop in series.
Other scheduled 2008 festival stops include Abuja, Nigeria (THISDAY Dome, July 11th), Lagos, Nigeria (THISDAY Center, July 13th) and London (Royal Albert Hall October 14th). Featured artists at this year's events will include Jay-Z, Usher, Mary J. Blige, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Fat Joe, Naomi Campbell, Oluchi, Tyson Beckford, Youssou N'Dour, Liya Kebede, Alek Wek, Ozwald Boateng, Chris Aire, 9ICE and Shank. Previous THISDAY events in 2006 and 2007 featured such performers as Lionel Richie, King Sunny Ade, Diana Ross, Beyoncé, Asa, Alicia Keys, P Diddy, Shakira, D'Banj, Snoop Dogg, 2Face, John Legend, Missy Elliot, Ne-yo, Busta Rhymes, Ciara and Kelly Rowland.
"Right now the international community seems to be dealing with the symptoms not the problems of Africa," says Obaigbena. "The symptoms are poverty and disease, but the problem is lack of social and physical infrastructure. This initiative is to highlight the need to focus sustainable solutions on the problems through massive investment in infrastructure and microfinance in order to rebuild Africa from the ground up. Europe is what it is today because after World War II the 'Marshall Plan' took hold. It did not deal with poverty, it focused on rebuilding Europe."

If you are a business owner, provider of social services, or political entity you can and should be part of history and rebirth of Philadelphia’s culture in what is shaping up to be one of the most explosive events of the year.

- ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN Radio City Music Hall on October 1
Oct 1, 2008
In the year of the band’s 30th anniversary, Echo & The Bunnymen comes to New York City on Wednesday, October 1st for a very special concert at Radio City Music Hall performing their beloved album Ocean Rain in its entirety backed by a 10-piece orchestra. Acclaimed musical director Rupert Christie, who recently helmed the live performances of Lou Reed’s Berlin will conduct the orchestra. Tickets go on sale to the public on Saturday, May 10 and are priced at $59.50, $49.50 and $39.50.
Released in 1984, Ocean Rain was Echo & The Bunnymen’s fourth album and is widely considered their masterpiece. It mesmerized Echo’s fans and broke them to a much wider audience on the strength of such towering songs as “Silver,” “Seven Seas” and the unforgettable “The Killing Moon.” Upon the album’s reissue in 2004 it was again praised in the media, with Blender Magazine acknowledging that Ian McCulloch “wasn’t that far off” when he had declared it the greatest album ever made, and admired it as “a portrait of splendid derangement with spectacular orchestrations.”
Echo & The Bunnymen are currently in the studio with producer John McLaughlin working on their tenth studio album entitled The Fountain which is set for release later this year. The first single from the album, “I Think I Need It Too” will be released in August in the UK.

Oct 25, 2008
Rock Against Diabetes is proud to announce a second event featuring the Dimebag Darrell Stage on October 25th, 2008 in Las Vegas, NV. The union came from discussions about the events being held for Rock Against Diabetes with Rita Haney-Abbott, Dimebag Darrell’s widow.
Haney-Abbotts very close to this disease in her private life as her grandmother is diabetic and recently her father Howell Haney was diagnosed last year as a diabetic. “Once my father became diabetic that is when I learned that diabetes can kill if not dealt with properly,” states Rita Haney Abbott. “I feel that this is a cause that we want to support. I know Dimebag would have been there to support a cause that can help, for he was very close to my father & would have done anything for him & vice versa. Dime always had a good heart that was unconditional in giving to many, not just his family.”
Rock Against Diabetes is an ongoing concert series and fundraising program with the goal of providing information and support to diabetics and people concerned about the disease worldwide. A main directive is to attempt to avoid asking the public for donations, but to offer great entertainment and unique fundraising experiences through music to raise funds that are needed to provide some new ground breaking support for diabetics.

Dec 31, 2008
