Last December, well known power group, the Sez Who returned to the Albuquerque stage at the Jazzbah, one of three premier jazz clubs in the city. Band leader and Yamaha Drum Artist Ken Lingad gathered band members after a twenty-year hiatus to relaunch this eclectic group. Adding sizzle and zing to his steady beats are Rob “Milo” Jaramillo (bass), Steve Figueroa (keys), Daniel Ward (guitar), and Ric “Mookie” Jaramillo (percussion). Well, hello, Music Up Close clubbers. Sorry for all of the packing boxes. We’ve been moving the club across the country and have been in transit and out of touch with all of our wonderful Music Up Close regulars. Well, howdy, folks. I’m back from a much needed break while renovations continue here at the clue. I did a little traveling, ate some good food, saw some folks I hadn’t seen in years, and took some great nature photos for my new book trailers coming out this month and next. While I was exploring my roots, I thought it would be great to introduce you to some new twists to roots, folk, and bluegrass here at the club this month. I really had way too much to choose from but thought I’d show you some artists you probably haven’t heard before.

Plus we have a great feature on the repatriation of Haitian music—a sort of regifting back to the people of that country, based on the archival work of Alan Lomax. My apologies for the lateness of this month’s Music Up Close. I’ve been reveling in unheard of 50 degree temperatures up her in the Northern Plains where I live AND working on details for my debut as a fiction author. The Bowdancer, my novelette, will be published as an ebook by Breathless Press later this month and I’ve just had my hands full here.

This month’s Music Up Close takes a look back at artists of the 60s and 70s and see what some of them are doing today. There are, of course, too many to chose from, but some recent releases helped me narrow the focus for this column. Main Stage features Gordon Lightfoot recently toured in my region. Back Stage offers a look at the Velvet Underground in a visually stunning new book by Jim De Rogatis. The Studio brings CD a review of a previously unreleased recording by the late Jim McPherson. Stepping back into the 21 st century, we’ll slip into the SonicBids Lounge and see what new talent is hanging out there.

After our initial open house, where you saw the contents of our little virtual music club here at Music Up Close, we will be highlighting different rooms each month, but always ending with our cocktail meet-and-greet at the SonicBids Lounge. For September, Club Ladies brings a look a Teisha Helgerson, the frontwoman for the band Amelia. Her early exposure to music has been keeping her spirits high, even when facing some difficult life events. The Studio’s reviews this month feature beatbox artist Heatbox and some great rock from Sci Fi. Finally, our meet-and-greet in the SonicBids Lounge has us rubbing elbows with some very talented new artists.
