The band has recently announced their spring North American tour, to kick off in Philadelphia on May 2nd.

‘Stone Garden’ started in a basement studio in Prague with a nearly continuous session over several days and nights. The original concept was influenced by the raw and seemingly endless jams of psychedelic pioneers. The freeform songs that emerged from those sessions were refined over several months at the band’s home in Tokyo where each song was sculpted into an uncommon form.

In fact, this is the only song on the record that doesn’t have any vocals harmonies, perhaps to better serve the song’s lyrical content. The sound effects and chorus guitar also kind of add to the tranquil mood. We still wanted the song to groove, though, and the drums and bass really drive that vibe home for us.”

“Time Lapse” by Mushroom People

With an infectious stuttering vocal sample, culled from a sample of Thrice’s “Artist in the Ambulance”, the hook on “Time Lapse” emerges seamlessly. Effervescent twinkles just prior to the two-minute mark help assemble a stellar bridge, leading back into the vocal sample-laden hook, which touts dance-laden appeal and an electro-pop shimmer. The vocals during the verses pack a more anthemic rock-based feel, which makes the successful electronic incorporation welcoming and effective.

Buttertones share dark, 60s tinged “Matador” at Clash

The Buttertones’ Gravedigging is more a movie waiting to happen than an album—or a soundtrack just waiting to inspire a movie, with scene after scene of action, tension and release set to a sound that takes everything good and true about American music before the Beatles prettied it up (surf, sweet soul, the boss saxophone-overdrive garage of the Northwest wailers like the Sonics) and matches it to punk energy, post-punk precision and the kind of personality that blows the circuit-breakers at a backyard party. (Which actually happened, of course.) They’ve even got casting suggestions if anyone wants to start filming—like Willem DeFoe, Winona Ryder, Lucy Liu, and Tommy Wiseau in as many roles as possible. Says guitarist Dakota Boettcher: “We all love movies so much. When you listen to a soundtrack, it has peaks and it has lows, but it’s a whole journey. That’s what we want to do. We want you to go on a journey.”
