SKOPE NEWS FOR FEBRUARY 22, 2017

HURRICANE FALL RELEASE THEIR NEW SINGLE ‘HOW WE GET DOWN’

There’s a hot wind blowing: the kind of gale that lays a field of cane down flat against the earth, whips the roadside paperbarks into a frenzy, and buffets the windows of a solitary Landcruiser sailing down a moonlit red dirt track. It’s the kind of wind that heralds the arrival of a ferocious summer storm, and at the eye of the storm is Hurricane Fall.

Tamworth-born-and-raised and now based in Newcastle, Hurricane Fall is comprised of Jesse Vee (lead vocals & guitar), Pepper Deroy (lead vocals & bass), Jimmy Hick (lead guitarist) and Lachlan ‘Dusty’ Coffey (skins & percussion).

Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band releases new video, “We Deserve a Happy Ending”

Rev. Peyton, known for his viral shotgun guitar video and virtuosic slide guitar, is back! This time Rev literally sets his best friend on fire, and all hell breaks loose behind Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band as they perform “We Deserve a Happy Ending” on their own front porch in the new video from the upcoming March 10, 2017 album release Front Porch Sessions.

“We researched these dangerous Hollywood-style stunts and my best friend, Jim Connor, volunteered to let me set him on fire inside my house,” says Rev. Peyton. All of these people, animals, and machinery were all packed inside of Rev. and Breezy’s tiny cabin in the Brown County Hills. “These folks are just our friends and family,” Rev. Peyton says. “We are lucky to be surrounded by hillbillies, performers, artists, daredevils, and adventurers.” With almost no budget, this video is one continuous camera shot and was captured by Rev’s good pal and photographer Tyler Zoller in one take. It’s all DIY, but all the proper precautions were taken. Rev. urges people not to try this at home, especially if you live in a wood house.

OUTYLA release debut single ‘The Light’

Introductory track ‘The Light’ is a rude awakening. Recorded with Cam Blackwood (George Ezra, London Grammar, Florence and the Machine, The Horrors), heavy guitar parts line up alongside chiming keys and bare, effect-starved vocals. At the time of writing, OUTLYA wasn’t even a fully-fledged project. But ‘The Light’ gave the trio something to pursue, a distinctive sound that thrives on its own sense of confidence.

Speaking about the track, Will explains, “At its core, it’s a song about self-belief and finding the strength to overcome in moments of loss and fear. It’s a call to arms from a desolate desert island. When we were recording The Light, we were referencing early Stones Throw records and the Black Keys amongst others. Songs that had a real undeniable air of confidence. We wanted our first song to capture some of the same swagger.”

Jon McKiel unveils new single, “Brothers”

With its tender and measured sway, “Brothers” stands in stark contrast to the LP’s kinetic first offering, “Conduit,” exchanging agitated protest for a beautiful and humble honesty. “It can never be a measured move / I won’t play too much for you / I can hand you the moon,” McKiel sings quietly. Decisive filtered guitar slides and chromatic breaks unravel around the lyrics, a shining testament to the intense chemistry of McKiel’s backing band: lead guitarist Jay Crocker (of experimental instrumental group Joyfultalk), bassisist Sean Dicey (also of Joyfultalk), and drummer Aaron Mangle (of Cousins).

Brothers appears on the album Memorial Ten Count, available March 10, 2017 from You've Changed Records and Headless Owl Records. Hear a new David Bazan song off his upcoming, Richard Swift-produced album

Written mostly over the back half of 2016 and produced, recorded, and mixed with legendary Oregon-based producer Richard Swift, Care is a response to both political and personal crises, seeking ways forward in each.

During transition, there is the urge to look backwards to figure out where we are supposed to go. It can be nostalgic; the golden haze that surrounds our selective memory. Sweet moments that make up our individual narratives, or the stories we tell each other to reinforce our collective identity.

Track Premiere: David Bazan – “Disappearing Ink”

darkDARK release debut EP

Anyone who’s heard the name S U R V I V E is aware of the current revival of ’70s and ’80s era synth music. The Strange Things composers tapped into a nostalgic fascination with the darker side of synth music and helped bring it to the masses. Their take on the sounds, however, has been very intentionally cinematic; what happens when you take that evocative aesthetic and update it with modern electropop sensibilities? Well, you get darkDARK.

The trio’s blunt, forceful songs are at once raw and primitive yet hold a nihilistic sophistication that forges clouds of nightmarish atmosphere, giving them a narcotic, dreamlike feel that very few bands achieve.

Bonesteel Releases ‘Epitome of Infamy’ Music Video

The band explains: “We feel that ‘Epitome’ is a great first impression of us. Lyrically, it speaks of a protagonist embracing the adversity they had to overcome. This is a story from the perspective of someone who was made out to be a villain, but their story was never heard. Everyone tries to be the hero, but there are times that you’re painted as the villain. We feel this topic is underrepresented, but at the same time is widely experienced by everyone.”

This number two LP Now I Feel Adored strips away the slowed blades and peers through a clearer, but darker lens.
