“Awake Me” is a song that’ll stop you dead in your tracks. From the swirling ambience permeating the track to the tender plucked arpeggio, Rosie proves a deft hand at creating sublime tonal flourishes to compliment her vivid lyrics and enchanting voice. At just 19, Rosie Carney has already experienced more of the tumult of life than most her age. Through her raw poetic talent, her experience is channelled into her beautiful music which, at times, recalls the vivid and imaginative folk ambience of Joni Mitchell.

HIDEOUT is Manhattan-based songwriter Gabriel Rodriguez, who’s also a longtime band member of Cults. His sophomore album, So Many Hoops / So Little Time, is set to release on February 3rd 2017 via Small Plates Records.

It’s been two years since the release of Hideout’s debut album Rookie, and in that time many things have changed for Rodriguez. Most tragically, the passing of his brother. So Many Hoops / So Little Time deals with grief in different spectrums –– the album ranges both sonically & lyrically from whimsical space-pop to crushing acoustic vulnerability. There isn’t a singular concept or message, but the deeper you delve into Hideout’s world the more you feel nostalgia and a sense of loss.

“Walks Like An Angel” By Christine Leakey

“The video for Walks Like An Angel was shot mostly underwater in the heart of the 1000 Islands where I grew up. I used simple techniques starting with the use of a GoPro on a selfie stick for the scenes of me sitting in the weeds, and the rest of the video was shot with the help of a friend. The scenery of Linda Perhacs was done in Agoura Canyon by one of her friends for me.”

CAT PREMIERES OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR “YOU BELONG TO ME”

Following the release of “You Belong To Me,” captivating singer-songwriter CAT returns today with the premiere a mysterious and magical new visual. According to Cat, “I shot this video with director Antony Langdon. He’s amazing when it comes to being creative and spontaneous in the moment. We went into it wanting to convey a feeling more than a story.” Watch the video HERE.

As Cat explains it, “the inspiration for the mood was the Rumi quote, ‘What you seek is seeking you’ since the song is about mutual obsession. I kept having dreams and visions of a woman in white wandering through the suburbs not really knowing whether she is chasing something or being chased. The song is about wanting to possess someone because of the way they make you feel and the beautiful madness that can take over.”

Video: Clyde Carson – “Gettin’ To It”

A songwriting perfectionist and left-coast hitmaker, Clyde Carson returned in 2017 with a batch of hyphy party-starters and club bangers. Riding a snaking bass bounce and snapping percussion, Clyde Carson and Keak Da Sneak strut their stuff on “Gettin’ To It,” which Stereogum called “a titanic fart-monster of a hyphy track.” Directed by Jeff Klevins, the “Gettin’ To It” visual finds the two rappers turning up at the bank, making it rain fresh bills in the bank vaults and partying with the bad ladies at the teller counter. The first video from S.T.S.A. 2, releasing February 10th, “Gettin’ To It” is a widescreen visual for a radio-ready Bay Area anthem. “Gettin’ To It” follows “Bring All Your Friends,” a breezy, HotNewHipHop-premiered track which features Mozzy and showcases Clyde’s versatility and ingenuity as a hitmaker.

DJ Missdevana ‘Chakra’

Nervous Horizon closed out 2016 with two robust, power-drum EPs from label head TSVI and Houndstooth’s Second Storey, but have looked beyond London’s reaches for their first outing of 2017. DJ Missdevana, a previous unknown producer and DJ from Holland, joins the camp for her debut EP, ‘Brass’ — a three-tracker that fuses the polyrhythms of classic UK funky and Dutch underground club strain, Bubbling.

A nod to the label’s willingness to explore new ways of pushing the boundaries of the club, DJ Missdevana’s work on ‘Brass’ marks her out as a fascinating new producer, but also feels fully in keeping with Nervous Horizon’s DNA. Key reference point, Bubbling — a niche, funky-meets-house strain of club music with a heavy focus on drums — is currently enjoying an renaissance in Holland, sharing rhythmic similarities with flourishing underground genres like Gqom, but this is an EP built to blur the lines.

Boldy James Announces House of Blues Mixtape

Following his triumphant return to hip-hop after nearly two years of silence with The Art of Rock Climbing, Boldy James releases “Do It,” the first single from his forthcoming mixtape House of Blues, due February 27th. “Do It” starts with a tenebrous piano, bolstered by inky synths dripping from the shadows, and a beat that rattles off crispy snares and hats which mirror Boldy James’ trap-influenced bars. In “Do It”, Boldy turns his razor-sharp tongue to the highs and lows that come with dealing dope, from how his uncle “taught [Boldy] how to put them bricks back together” to hiding “100 thou in a mattress.” Despite the nebulous subject matter, Boldy’s veracious lyrics and obsidian-edged flow remain laser-focused, attacking the beat with a rhyme-scheme that proves yet again why he was cosigned by the lyrical titan Nas.

David Bazan announces a new, Richard Swift-produced album

During transition, there is the urge to look backwards to figure out where we are supposed to go. It can be nostalgic; the golden haze that surrounds our selective memory. Sweet moments that make up our individual narratives, or the stories we tell each other to reinforce our collective identity.

But that glance backwards can distract us from where we are now and what it really means; from the sea change, from the tide that sweeps what we know away and leaves us unencumbered, shivering, and beginning again.

Care is that tide. The one that sneaks up behind us and washes everything away. That strips us of our armor and stops us mid-sentence. That brings us back to where we are.

“This song talks about someone who is coming to the realization that she can be happy alone. During the song, there is an internal battle going on that’s fueled by the ‘beliefs brought by our society’ of what the perfect life should be like by finding their prince charming or the perfect missing ‘half’. The demons and monsters she battles in her mind are symbolic of these prior beliefs. But we can’t waste our life away searching and waiting for the perfect person to come along.” Adriana Fernandez
