Eric Gales To Release “Middle Of The Road” On February 24th

Provogue / Mascot Label Group will release Eric Gales new studio album Middle Of The Road on February 24. Memphis-born Gales shares, “Unfortunately you have to go through some things to be free. Now, I feel the most free I’ve ever been in life, even more so than when I was a kid. You gotta help yourself man, once you can help yourself you can genuinely help someone else.” The title, “Middle of the Road,” is the running theme throughout the record. He offers, “It’s about being fully focussed and centred in the middle of the road. If you’re on the wrong side and in the gravel you’re not too good and if you’re on the median strip that’s not too good either, so being in the middle of the road is the best place to be.”

The release is Eric Gales fourth album on Provogue/Mascot label Group (Joe Bonamassa, Beth Hart, Black Stone Cherry, Warren Haynes, The Robert Cray Band, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band) after Transformation (2011), Relentless (2010) and The Psychedelic Underground (2007) and it sees him at his most expressive yet; it is a deeply personal and reflective record that echoes where he is in his life right now and he opens himself up and allows himself the chance to really flourish.

Tobin Sprout (GBV) New LP ‘The Universe And Me’

How do you bring a child’s curiosity to life? For Tobin Sprout, formerly of indie rock icons Guided by Voices, the answer is to revisit it with the wounded tenor of an aging piano man; someone searching, desperately, for his place in the cosmos. The Universe and Me is Sprout’s sixth solo album; hatched during a seven-year gestation period that included unearthing lost recordings (the single, “Future Boy Today/Man of Tomorrow” for one, was being saved for GBV), and digging through a treasure chest of memories in his home studio in Michigan, where Sprout composed behind his shambling grand piano and trembling, boyish voice. Each home recording was captured live with Sprout’s new band — which led to marvelous imperfections.

The Universe and Me takes a deliberately primitive approach that focuses on feeling, as opposed to production. The result is a vague bridge between the ballads of psych-era Beatles, and the haunting vulnerability of Daniel Johnston’s Hi, How Are You?. It’s no surprise, then, that Sprout penned and illustrated his own magical children’s books as The Universe and Me plays like a deceptively dense reimagining of simple subjects like comic books, finding your purpose in life, and growing old.

Blue Plutos “Immediate Engagements”

Off the group’s new album ‘Moon Language’, “Immediate Engagements is about getting older and recognizing the need to really focus attention on the interests or hobbies or matter most, in order to feel like we’re maximizing the time we have on this Earth.

“As far as the writing of the song, we wanted to write a song that was really straightforward but also kind of chugging at the same time,” Ryan Agnew explains. “I was listening to a lot of Beach House and and you will know us by the trail of dead… while we were recording it which I think is reflected in the production of the song. The riff at the end of the song is a very fun one to play and was written separately but fits well – it also has a really nice solo from Tyler. ”

London Grammar Return With “Rooting For You”

On New Years Day, British trio London Grammar released their spine-tingling new track and performance video for “Rooting For You.” “New Year, new music” the band simply stated on their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter from Australia where they had headlined on New Years Eve at the annual Falls Festival in Byron Bay.

Battleme’s “Burn This Town” is KUTX’s Song of the Day

Matt Drenik spent ten years in Austin, both with the band LIONS and under his own solo moniker Battleme. After moving to Portland, Oregon, Battleme took off, expanding into a full-fledged outfit while beaming its songs around the world through placement on the TV show Sons Of Anarchy. In May of 2014, Drenik made a pilgrimage back to Austin and returned to his solo roots with an acoustic show at our very own Cactus Cafe. The set is finally getting a release later this month as a stripped-down EP. His Sons Of Anarchy hit, “Burn This Town,” is already stark in its studio version. It’s only fitting the live version of the song is played on a stage once haunted by Townes Van Zandt.

Sims Premieres New 360° Video For “What They Don’t Know”

In November, Sims released his monster album More Than Ever on Doomtree Records. A tour quickly followed and with that came the financial challenge of recovering from a van break-in while out on the road. Within 20 hours a gofundme page was set up and the support of loyal fans and friends raised all of the money needed to replace the gear. It is because of that dedication that Sims decided to premiere the new video for “What They Don’t Know” directly with those supportive fans instead of a more traditional high-profile blog partnership. Members of the Doomtree mailing list received the video and premiere instructions a day in advance and were instructed to post all at once from their various social media accounts at a specific time. It was a way of saying thank you to the people who directly lended a helping hand and also feel connected to something bigger. Sims explained to fans by saying, “We generally release videos through an online music publication—it’s a great way to get some eyes on the vid right off the rip. But I learned something last month when our van was broken into. You (you, personally) are the most ferocious and commanding sharers of information that I have access to. So why not team with you?”

Once and Future Band welcomes 2017 with new track “Tell Me Those Are Tears of Joy”

In the vapor trail of the album’s first single “How Does It Make You Feel”, you can smell the burnt ozone of a seventies-full-orchestra-nebula-pop-odyssey, the flakes floating down and landing on you like snow and giving you the grave-chills…the ash of a masterpiece pop song. Once and Future Band: this incredibly accomplished cabal of total prog wizards has circled the earth, but then, these are the accomplished gentlemen of many former pursuits (the formidable Drunk Horse among them) and all of them comets themselves. It’s telling that this is the album Castle Face Records is releasing after Thee Oh Sees’ recent psych-pop explorations of ‘An Odd Entrances’, showing the label will continue to reach deep into the ether. The journey continues today with perhaps a title that couldn’t be more fitting as we all turn the page on the shit-show that was 2016 — “Tell Me Those Are Tears of Joy” premieres today via Consequence of Sound. Listen on Soundcloud.
