ASIAN-AMERICAN ROCK BAND THE SLANTS’ WIN HISTORIC TRADEMARK CASE

On Tuesday, December 22, 2015, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that Portland, Oregon-based Asian-American dance rock band The Slants have the right to register their trademark. In a decision with national implications on free speech, the appeals court ruled that the U.S Patent and Trademark Office and Department of Justice violated the band’s First Amendment rights.

In a 9-3 vote, the appeals court struck down the “disparagement” portion of the Lanham Act, a 1946 law that allowed the Trademark Office to deny marks that could be considered “scandalous, immoral, or disparaging.”

The Slants’ Simon Tam gives a TEDx Talk on “Losing the Line Between Art & Activism,” which talks a bit of their struggle to define their art vs. activism work:

SHANNON BRYANT NEW ALBUM NEXT MONTH

Shannon Bryant found a different way to put her philosophy degree to good use. Accompanying the singer-songwriter’s effervescent melodies and honeyed harmonies are philosophical ruminations on love, connection and intimacy that, like life itself, offer a balance of sunny optimism and hope along with inevitable bouts of pained heartbreak and disillusionment. The soprano songbird wrote and produced her third adult contemporary-acoustic rock album, “Light,” which will be released February 26 by Belle Estrela Music and serviced to NPR, CMJ, Triple A and college radio stations and specialty shows for airplay. Multiple GRAMMY® winner Joe Chiccarelli (Jason Mraz, Alanis Morissette, U2, Elton John, Frank Zappa) mixed the ten-track set.

“Making music with my dad is always an almost unbelievable process,” Saba explained to The FADER in their online streaming premiere. “I remember what it was like watching him in the studio, watching him produce and perform and stuff like that when I was younger and wanting to do that when I got older. It’s a very interesting relationship, I remember when I turned 18, I was in New Jersey with my brother Joseph Chilliams, and our Dad bought us studio time and just basically left us there for a week and wanted an entire project done by the end. Working with him on ‘GPS’ was no different, I feel like he’s always been one of those people continuously pushing me in the right direction musically.”

MURALS SHARE MELLOW, REVERB-LADEN “WATCHING IN THE DARK” VIA SPIN

Formed nearly 10 years ago while in high school the band now known as Murals (Evan Blum, Jacob Weaver, Rob Monsma) have traveled a long road to their debut Full Length LP. After some dips and turns the three core members have landed back in their home town of Louisville, KY. They write record and live in a house on a hill in the not so swank part of town – the type of place that acid trips and all day jam sessions go hand in hand. The results are an ever present body of slow churning psychedelic folk that wouldn’t be so surprising in your hippie dad’s record collection or buried deep in the crates of your headiest record store.

Pterodactyl Sky is more than a collection of songs; it’s an intellectually charged revival of stellar Rock N’ Roll, told from the point of view of a sex-positive feminist revolutionary. Powered by the formidable vocals of lead singer/songwriter Savannah Pope (hailed as “Ann Wilson in David Bowie’s edition of Rocky Horror Picture Show,”) the album presents an entirely unique, contemporary spin on 1970s Glam, Glitter, and Prog Rock. Engineered at Kitten Robot Studios by LA music pioneer Paul Roessler (Nina Hagen, 45 Grave, Elliot Smith), Pterodactyl Sky is peppered with intricate chord progressions and enticing time signatures. Its artful lyrics run the gamut from jurassic extinction and domestic abuse to tantric space exploration and literature.

The track is a vital live favorite from Holy Esque and an important track in understanding the band. FIELD MUSIC NEW SINGLE

“Disappointed” is as straight-forwardly pop as Field Music get, a love story lost in a fog of mismatched expectations. As David, who takes the lead vocal on this one, says:

‘We were consciously embracing the simplicity and directness of the pop music we love, where most of the song is in the chorus and the singing is always right at the front.I’m imagining a couple trying to get together and not quite managing it because they’re a bit older and they’ve already built up complete lives as individuals. Their expectations of what love should be have become too byzantine to let themselves take a risk.’
