HIGH HIGHS “BOXING”

High Highs have shared a stunning new track ‘Boxing’ today on KEXP. The band describes the creative process behind the track as such: “It was the result of listening to a lot of Burial combined with lots of morning endorphins from boxing classes. Jack and I were vibing in the studio on this slow chordal pulse after playing with a few versions of the song. After a few days of working, it started to sound like a giant walking through a vast landscape.”

NEIGHBORS SHARE FIRST SONG “IT’S HARD”

After six years of touring the West Coast and continental United States on top of cycling through five different band members, Seattle indie-rock outfit Neighbors have seen enough shit to pack together one hell of an album. Their latest offering, the forthcoming
Very Rare Expensive Jewelry, is an eight-track journey into the unforgiving depths of stardom and success.

“I wrote most of the record when I was sobering up, going to therapy, getting on meds, and dealing with the end of a relationship that I ruined,” says frontman José Díaz Rohena. “In that weird space I was getting more ideas, better ideas, than ever before. My playing and singing got better. In many ways, I feel like this is a totally new band (I’m a totally different person now).”

THE HONEYCUTTERS NEW VIDEO

The Honeycutters recently filmed a music video for their original song “Jukebox” at the historical and eclectic Town Pump Tavern in Black Mountain, NC, just east of their hometown of Asheville. Folk Alley premiered the video and writes of it, “The jolly, honky-tonk rhythm of the song underscores the sweet plaintiveness of Platt’s voice…until it doesn’t. As she steps up on to the stage to join the band, her smile wide, her voice big and bright, she and the other musicians seem to be in perfect sync, swinging, swaying and encouraging the whole of the bar to join in and look ahead to the brighter side of life.”

TULIPS NEW VIDEO

Angie & Taleen’s friendship blossomed as they sent each other mixtapes between L.A. and Chicago. When Taleen moved back home in 2011 the two started jamming, blending her love of goth/shoegaze and Angie’s pop-riot sensibilities to create TÜLIPS: dreamy, punky noise pop with a riot grrrl bent. Soon after, they found a drummer and began to play local DIY and zine shows, with Taleen and Angie trading off on guitar and bass. After recording their LP, “Doom & Bloom,” which was mixed by Brad Laner of ’90s U.S. shoegazers Medicine, the girls quickly realized that they wanted to bring the same full guitar sound to their live show. They added a full-time bassist to the lineup, with the girls at the front both playing their guitars.

ANDREW JOHNSTON COVERS COREY HART

“A lot of memories came rushing back, because that is the soundtrack of my childhood right there. I grew up in the country but went to school in the city, so a lot of my early memories are driving around with my Mum and Dad listening to Human League, Hall and Oates, Men at Work, Corey Hart etc etc. In some ways, hearing the song again after so long helped to re-connect me with the child-like fascination that I used to have for music and it motivated me to try to get back on tour before the end of the year.”

SPADA ‘LOST IN SPACE’

Spada is back with a new club dress, with a turn between deep and tech house. It’s a new sound, where dance atmospheres are wrapped up with gloominess and mystery. Guitars get it started; then the track goes through synths and trombone. It’s a journey, from the underground to the big audience.

AUBRIE SELLERS UNVEILS NEW SONG

Of the music, Sellers, comments, “My influences are all over the place: the Kinks, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Buddy and Julie Miller, Creedence, even Ricky Skaggs. Led Zeppelin is my biggest rock influence—and that goes right straight, for me, to Ralph Stanley. That raw bluegrass, the banjo, that’s the same energy and intensity you get in punk. It’s all music that’s driven, that’s haunted, that cuts and moves.”
