FERAL MOANS EP STREAM

Animal Omen’s dualistic approach to songwriting means that darkness is equally as important as light, and their knack for restraint, coupled with their habit to climb peaks and descend into warm reverb-laden valleys, is well exemplified on Feral Moans.

Parts of the EP are even influenced by the earthquake that devastated Nepal in April, as two of the band members were trekking through the Himalayas at the time (60 miles from the epicenter), only to be abandoned by their guide at 15,000 feet shortly after the earthquake struck.

FIGS VISION “LITTLE MAN”

Filming the video was an extremely physical experience- if you can imagine spending 9 hours in the dead of NYC winter wearing clothes we brought from home (Los Angeles), you might get an idea of how intense the filming was. It was a very special surprise because the shivering and pain that we believe to be clearly visible came off exactly how we wanted it to, in a genuine way. A lot of dance videos that come out are highly sexualized and objectify women- the dancing in this video was impactful for us because it isn’t necessarily sexual, although it could be. UNA projects have done a tremendous job at telling stories and conveying deep rooted emotions with their physical display.

JULIEN BAKER “SOMETHING” SONG PREMIERE VIA STEREOGUM

Stripped-back and raw with emotion, Sprained Ankle is an intimate and exquisite debut. Nineteen year-old Baker wrote the album’s nine songs across 2014, following her move from Memphis to Murfreesboro for college. Away from her family and close friends (including her band Forrister), writing proved to be a creative, cathartic outlet for her loneliness. The resultant songs are confessional yet accessible, personally contemplative yet universally relatable, unsparingly honest yet deeply heartening – and filled with tales of staggering experiences and striking imagery.

D.O.A. NEW ALBUM

D.O.A. is back with a vengeance! It looked like Canada’s legendary punk pioneers were going to hang it up, as Joe Shithead Keithley, the godfather of “hardcore” sought political office, but that didn’t happen this time so the political world’s loss is the music world’s gain. D.O.A. has a brand new album, Hard Rain Falling, out now on Sudden Death Records and a world-wide tour in the works.

To come up with Hard Rain Falling, Joe, Paddy Duddy (drums) and Mike Maggot (bass) took inspiration from D.O.A.’s early classics: Something Better Change, Hardcore 81 and War on 45 and made the songs quick, short and right to the point. With anthems like “The Cops Shot a Kid,” “Punk Rock Hero,” “Warmonger,” “Kicked In The Teeth” and “Racism Sucks,” they take on environmental destruction, racism, street gangs and warmongers. There’s even a cover of the reggae classic “Johnny Too Bad.” Just what’s needed from what some people call Canada’s protest band.

VAADAT CHARIGIM NEW VIDEO

This week Israeli shoegaze trio Vaadat Charigim share the cinematic video for “Hashiamum Shokea.” The video was directed by the band’s drummer Yuval Guttman. According to the band, “the idea of the video was to show many people repeating pointless actions, while the lead singer calmly delivers his text about boredom and pointlessness, looking straight on through everything happening. During the choruses Juval Harring sings : ‘Sometimes the boredom sinks in, and sometimes it overflows, god is all knowing, and Man returns to sand’.

YAWN NEW EP STREAM

Chicago’s YAWN celebrates the release of their new Day Trip EP today (8/21) on Feel Trip Records & Old Flame Records. A collection of sunny pop songs — including a title track that Consequence of Sound calls “this year’s weirdest and most eccentric summer jam” — it finds the band going back to its roots, crafting catchy pop tunes with just the right amount of strangeness.
