FRIEND ROULETTE “STONED ALONE”

Brooklyn’s wonderfully enigmatic Friend Roulette will release their sophomore LP, I See You. Your Eyes Are Red. on June 2 via Goodnight Records.

SPIN announced the album this week when they premiered the cascading psychedelic track, “Stoned Alone” saying, “It is re-introducing us to the band’s enigmatic ability to wrap feelings of impending danger in relaxing, mellow psychedelia… ‘Stoned’ blends piercing electric wind elements into the group’s usual orchestral rock repertoire.” Matthew Meade (guitars & vocals) says “Stoned Alone” is about “the unfortunate process of dying from an overdose,” while Julia Tepper (vocals & violin) adds a hint of optimism. “It’s an anthem for anyone who goes to a dark place when they turn inward. The song tells a lonely story about dying alone with a funky bass-line to remind us that everything’s ok.”

JON DEROSA TO RELEASE ‘BLACK HALO’ ALBUM TRAILER

Black Halo the second full-length release from Jon DeRosa, following up 2013’s A Wolf In Preacher’s Clothes (Rocket Girl). After moving from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in early 2014, DeRosa began frequenting Joshua Tree and other sparsely populated nature destinations in California. His spiritual attraction to and fascination with the solitude and openness of these new landscapes, combined with his penchant for 60’s pop songwriting and orchestration, largely inspired the vast “West Coast” sound of Black Halo.

Though the amply bearded, heavily-tattooed DeRosa looks the part of Hells Angel-meets-Source Family member, his striking baritone is more in tune with the Golden Age of crooners, 1950’s Nelson Riddle arrangements and 1960’s teen love songs. Known for his dreamlike ambient-pop work as Aarktica, DeRosa integrates those signature otherworldly elements into the songs on Black Halo, combining a certain kind of occult mysticism with a refined orchestral sound. His ability to successfully blend such disparate elements is what makes his music so strikingly original and DeRosa such a singular character. But then again, this is the kind of thing that can happen when your past includes studying under minimalist pioneer La Monte Young, making records with Alan Sparhawk of Low, collaborating with Stephin Merritt, and touring Europe with Lydia Lunch.

GRACE TEAMS UP WITH G-EAZY AND QUINCY JONES TO RECREATE LESLEY GORE’S 1963 HIT “YOU DON’T OWN ME”

RCA Records’ latest vocal powerhouse, GRACE, has teamed up with G-Eazy and Quincy Jones for a new version of Lesley Gore’s 1963 hit song “You Don’t Own Me.” Considered one of the first female empowerment anthems of the 60’s, GRACE delivers the song’s original message with a vigor that still rings true today. G-Eazy punctuates the song with timely lyrics that praises female independence. “You Don’t Own Me” is currently available for purchase or streaming.

Recorded before Gore’s passing, legendary award winning producer Quincy Jones – the producer of the 1963 version and several other Gore hits – gave his stamp of approval by co-producing this version alongside fast rising hit producer Parker Ighile, who gives the production a hard-hitting 2015 electro hip-hop edge.

LISTEN TO THE FULL-ALBUM PREMIERE OF BUFFALO KILLERS’ ANDY GABBARD’S DEBUT SOLO ALBUM

“…simultaneously distorted, psychedelic and enthusiastic. Cut in one 12-hour session with Gabbard on every instrument, one track barrels into the next, urgent but not rushed, and evokes some of the fantastical imagery of Syd Barrett and Roky Erickson and the fuzzy bliss of Dinosaur Jr. and the Atomic Bitchwax.” – ALL MUSIC

MAESTUS DEBUT FULL LENGTH STREAM

Pacific Northwestern blackened doom collective, MAESTUS, recently unveiled the forlorn fruit of their debut full-length, Voir Dire. Comprised of Stephen Parker (Arkhum) and Jarrod Hyam (Sophos), with Kenneth Parker (Grst) and Cordell Cline (Dimensionless) recently enlisted to fulfill rhythm duties, Voir Dire was engineered and mixed during the Summer months of 2014 at Parker’s own The Wilderness Studio and delivers seventy-four minutes of heart-blistering grimness, concluding with a four-part epic, “Opaque Shadows In Framed Stillness,” the duration of which makes up nearly half the record’s length. Mastered by Agalloch’s Jason Walton at Earth In Sound in October 2014, Voir Dire integrates black metal, doom and ambient, resulting in a caustic yet lush confessional.
