Penicillin Baby has some big things in store for 2015 that I can’t share quite yet, but you can head over to their SoundCloud to check out “Stick It Out,” along with some of the bands’ other recent output. Penicillin Baby has gained a sizable following in Nashville thanks to their rich psychedelic pop melodies, pounding bass and rhythmic drum beats that make it impossible not to dance, along with adding in a layer of fuzz that jumps in at just the right moment.

OMAR SOSA “SAD MEETING”

To describe Omar Sosa as an “Afro-Cuban” composer/pianist is like saying James Joyce was an Irish writer. Fixing his point of origin and the tradition that spawned him doesn’t begin to convey the singularity of his art, which, over the course of 22 albums as a leader (and 7 GRAMMY nominations) since 1997, has mixed jazz and Latin rhythms with classical, flamenco, African and Middle Eastern elements to create a continuously surprising hybrid.

Sosa continues his cross-cultural odyssey with Ilé, which means “home” and “earth” in Lucumí, a Yoruba dialect used in the Santería religion in his native Cuba. Accompanying him are his Quarteto AfroCubano, consisting of drummer Ernesto Simpson and multi-reed player Leandro Saint-Hill (both from Sosa’s hometown of Camagüey) and Mozambican electric bassist Childo Tomas. They are complemented by guest artists from around the world, including the Afro-Cuban percussionist Pedrito Martinez, who makes exhilarating contributions to six tracks.

EULA’S WOOL SUCKING FULL ALBUM STREAMING

Brooklyn-based trio EULA began with frontwoman Alyse Lamb making 4-track recordings in her bedroom; her early sound was thick with haunting vocals, unraveling harmonies and dissonant guitar work. After passing these demos around at music school in New Haven, CT, drummer Nathan Rose and bassist Jeff Maleri joined and quickly started touring the East Coast and Midwest, releasing a series of demos and two EPs along the way. The three-piece became known for their raw, high-energy shows, Lamb’s onstage antics (she once used a broken Tecate as a slide while on tour with Mission of Burma) and her developed signature singing style of rapidly alternating between soft, upper-register purrs and aggressive caterwauls.
