SKOPE NEWS FOR FEBRUARY 24, 2015

NEVER YOUNG “UR A FRONT”

Never Young is a noise rock band from the Bay Area in California. Blending raw punk sounds and 90’s guitar music with a synthetic digital aesthetic, jarring militant anthems meet angular pop songwriting. Never Young’s futurist sound is fleshed out and fully realized on their new self-titled EP; the sound of a pastel yellow iPhone 5c crashing through the window of your psyche.

ODESSA PREMIERES ALBUM TEASER VIDEO

In anticipation of the album, the critically acclaimed California songstress also just premiered this intimate teaser video. Watch it HERE. The clip unlocks her world with a wistful melody and entrancing visuals, offering a hint of the wonder to arrive with the album.

THE LOONS “MISS CLARA REGRETS”

Lead singer is Mike Stax of Ugly Things magazine, Anja Stax plays bass, Marc Schroeder and Chris Marsteller are the guitarists, and Mike Kamoo is their drummer and producer. Together they have seen more releases over the two decades than we can list here. And every single one of them is worth owning.

A-1 “SUNDAY LOVE”

Bay Area rapper A-1’s anticipated forthcoming album, Thurlian, is releasing on March 5, and he’s been flexing his lyrical muscle in a weekly series of single releases as part of his #THURLSDAY campaign. Premiered by Mass Appeal, this week A-1 shares “Sunday Love,” which features fellow Bay Area artist Cole singing on the chorus and flips a sample of Cherrelle’s soul/funk stepper “Saturday Love.” “Before me and my sister started taking the bus to school, my mom used to play KFRC, the oldies station, every single morning in the car on the way to drop us off at elementary,” explains A-1. “I grew up hearing that song ‘Saturday Love’ and I always loved that record.”

18+ “DRY” VIDEO

18+ is a multimedia artist duo – equal parts music and visual- from LA that remained somewhat mysterious until the release of their debut album, Trust, on the Fabric offshoot label Houndstooth at the end of last year. To say I’m mildly obsessed with them is an understatement – music that is “equal parts erotic and uncomfortable” (Noisey). They put up a new video today for their song “Dry” plus new song “Body” – links below and more from them soon, keep an eye out.

WHITE HILLS ON NOISEY

White Hills is set to expand the definition of psychedelic rock once again this April with the release of their newest album Walks for Motorists. Featuring production from David Wrench (FKA Twigs, Owen Pallett, Bear In Heaven), the band has stripped down their sound on the new album, emphasizing groove and bringing White Hills’ vocals to the fore. Noisey interviewed the band about recording the new album and touring with The Cult, and you can check out a trailer directed by bassist/vocalist Ego Sensation featuring clips from the album as well as footage of the band in the studio with Wrench.

DRGN KING NEW VIDEO

DRGN King premiers single “Undertow” off of their debut album Baltimore Crush. Check out what EARMILK had to say below.

In DRGN King’s sophomore LP Baltimore Crush the group focuses on their story of growing up in Baltimore and the underground scene they learned it all from. Their songs resonate tales of teenage angst, disenfranchised kids half stoned and plagued with an existential crusade to find their place in the world. The whole album is gritty and poetic craft of tales from their past, present and future. You can practically smell the stale beer soaked venue floors and cigarette tinged hair in every chord progression.

YAGULL NEW ALBUM

Yagull’s official debut for MoonJune Records, ‘Kai’, finds the band expanding its post-rock chamber soundtrack concept to great effect. The result is a simmering sonic bouillabaisse, chocked full of choice ingredients which delectably merge to blur the lines drawn by traditional genres – delightfully teasing the palette, while appealing to an expansive range of music aficionados! The group delivers twelve songs on this joyous outing: eight brand new compositions; two tunes from Films, reworked and revisited; plus, two tastefully-revised classic rock covers. The tracks showcase Yagull’s considerably potent stylistic capacity, making for a savory, finely-polished sophomore release. This new effort finds Yagull now launching itself from a duo framework – with Sasha Markovic being joined by the extraordinary pianist, Kana Kamitsubo – this most special of occasions is perfectly accentuated by a host of guest contributors; featuring fellow MoonJune international recording maestros, Beledo (guitar, lute), Dewa Budjana (guitar) and Marko Djordjevic (drums), and many other great musicians. With ‘Kai’, Sasha, Kana & company have embarked on a majestic journey that will appeal to a broad range of listeners… and carry them along for the ride!

SLOW TURISMO NEW SINGLE

“We are are made up of three brothers and two non brothers, we’ve been together for just over a year but have already had national and a little international radio play for our previous two singles.”

READABLE GRAFFITI ‘URA NRG’

Readable Graffiti are pleased to announce the release of their new single ‘URA NRG’, the second single from their exciting current EP called ‘Out to the Races’.

‘URA NRG’ (i.e. ‘you are an energy’) begins by showing off a softer, more delicate side of readable graffiti. But the gentle vocals and smooth electric keys of the verse eventually give way to a melodic chorus that packs a punch, combining synth stabs, a huge bassline and dramatic vocals. The lyrics tell a tale of ebbs and flows in energy between people, and the ever present urge to party your problems away (“It’s getting quiet but I won’t go home tonight”).

KODALINE “THE ONE”

Following the release of their top 5 UK album ‘Coming Up for Air’, Kodaline will release their second single ‘The One’ on April 12th.

Bereft of a wedding present for their sound engineer, vocalist Steve Garrigan thought rather than heading to John Lewis he would write the happy couple a song. “Like an idiot, I left writing it until the night before,” he recalls. “Singing it the next day was the scariest thing I’ve ever done, much more nerve-wracking than standing in front a festival crowd.”

RAHIEM SUPREME NEW MIXTAPE

“Rahiem, with Lost Gemz, provides a balanced variety between street stories, love stories, and anthem-type cuts, as well as a balance between boom bap and trap soundscapes. Over the course of forty-eight minutes, Supreme finds a way to quench whatever thirst any listener may have, all without stretching beyond his own voice.

STAGES “NEW WAR”

Jacksonville, Florida-based metal newcomers STAGES have dropped their gripping debut single via BryanStars. The song, which comes to listeners in the form of an artistically abrasive lyric video, is undeniably heavy — a powerful debut from a band ready to take the metal and hardcore scene by storm.

“‘New War’ is about anybody who has left me behind,” said frontman Aaron Berkshire on the lyrically transparent track. The song, which was produced by internationally-renowned music producer Joey Sturigs (The Devil Wears Prada, Asking Alexandria), is the first to come off of the band’s debut EP of the same name. The song features a dynamic guest vocal spot from Steven McCorry of Rise Records band Exotype.
