MARTIN $KY “PLUG”

Martin $ky is definitely not of this world. On his newest single “Plug,” premiered by MISHKA, the Southside savant creates one of the most peculiar musical concoctions of 2015. Raised in Chicago, 20-year-old rapper/producer Martin $ky’s dizzying vocals sway through the dingy canals of clamoring 808 slaps and shape-shifting sonic droplets. “Plug” is the fourth single off Martin’s Everywhere But Here EP, releasing March 3.

WILLIAM RYAN FRITCH STREAMS NEW FULL-LENGTH

Fritch is a composer, but he isn’t comfortable with that term. He has little in common with most contemporary composers. Most ambient, minimalist, and modern classical music leaves him wanting, and he’s clueless when it comes to that electro-acoustic shtick, though he is often grouped into that category. Until a few years ago, he couldn’t read a lick of music. He still has nightmares about having to sight-read a piece of music in front of an audience, pants or no pants.

82-YEAR-OLD MISSISSIPPI BLUESMAN LEO “BUD” WELCH SECOND ALBUM

At age 82, bluesman Leo “Bud” Welch rocks on stage like a teenager — dancing and spinning as he beats out jagged chords and grimy solos on his pink, sparkle-covered guitar. That raw youthful energy and Welch’s old-school juke-joint jones blend full-throttle in the 10 songs on I Don’t Prefer No Blues, his second release for Fat Possum Records’ subsidiary Big Legal Mess. The album is a garage-blues manifesto that weds waves of prickly six-string distortion and gutbucket drums with Welch’s smoke-and-ash voice and mud-crusted guitar — and lives up to Fat Possum’s history of producing edgy but deeply rooted recordings by artists like Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside.

I Don’t Prefer No Blues, due out March 24, 2015 on Big Legal Mess, is the follow-up to last year’s Sabougla Voices, an all-gospel disc that marked Welch’s debut as both a recording artist and a songwriter. That album was heralded as a fresh breath of rust-bearing air — a throwback to an era of rural music free from outside influences and a reminder that blues-fueled primitivism is still personified by a handful of living Southern artists.

THE LEISURE SOCIETY PREMIERE VIDEO FOR “TALL BLACK CABINS”

Of the single & record, songwriter Nick Hemming, stated, “I took a visit to Hastings and I noticed several tall black cabins – these structures are used by local fishermen for drying their nets. Theirs is a small and shrinking industry, but they have a passion for their trade and keep it going, even though it’s not always financially viable. We recorded the album onto analogue tape at Konk studios and mastered it at Abbey Road Studios. We wanted to make the best record we could, so despite the expense we crafted it in this way – not for money, but for the love of making it.”

BRIDGE NINE WELCOMES AFTER THE FALL

Albany, NY’s After The Fall have emerged with their fifth and best album to date, Dedication, an earnest and proficiently played strain of technical, speedy melodies that hit that sweet spot between skate punk and melodic hardcore. The LP is a dedication to original bassist and friend Brian J Peters who passed away in October of 2013.

SHANNON WRIGHT ANNOUNCES U.S. TOUR + “CAUSTIC LIGHT”

Ernest Jenning Record Co. is excited to announce Shannon Wright’s first full U.S. tour in ten years. The tour, which will be in support of Young Widows, will start on March 12 at Headliners Music Hall in Louisville, KY and conclude on March 21 at The Earl in Atlanta, GA.

Wright released the full-length In Film Sound in 2013 to great acclaim, and this will be her first tour in support of the record. Crashing out of the gates with the aptly titled “Noise Parade,” In Film Sound immediately reintroduces listeners to her trademark cutting guitars with a distinctive bittersweet fury that jumps from the speakers. In Film Sound bursts with urgent immediacy, a kind of direct intention-into-thought that’s as raw as it is focused. The easy sway of “The Caustic Light” thrusts into a chaotic attack of atonal guitar and rhythm, while the gorgeous piano dirge of “Bleed” overflowing with chest pounding wonder and loss.

AINSLIE WILLS RELEASES NEW SINGLE “DRIVE”

Traveling north from Melbourne to tropical Brisbane to record is something that Wills and her co-collaborator Lawrence Folvig would never have contemplated….that was until they met producer Matt Redlich (Emma Louise, Holy Holy, Trouble with Templeton), the trio sharing common musical ground and sense of humour – a bond that was too hard to walk away from.

The first single Drive is the first taste of the Brisbane adventure and was recorded over two days at Redlich’s studio Grandmas’s Place in 2014.
