SKOPE NEWS FOR JUNE 12, 2014

NEW SINGLE BY GENE THE SOUTHERN CHILD

From a small town called Florence, Alabama, Gene the Southern Child has been quietly releasing music under the radar for years. Florence is part of an area known as “The Shoals,” which houses the legendary FAME Recording Studios and is also the hometown of W.C. Handy “The Father of Blues.” Hailing from this rich musical history, Gene’s unique style is smooth Southern hip-hop, incorporating poetry, blues, and soul. His is a fresh perspective in what is an often redundant niche.

MATTHEW SWEET SUMMER TOUR

ith a career that stretches back to the mid-’80s, Matthew Sweet has never followed trends, though his landmark 1991 album Girlfriend was responsible for starting one — its bone-dry, caterwauling sonics opening up a wild and picturesque new terrain for restless singer/songwriters to inhabit and explore. Following up with the heavy pop releases Altered Beast and 100% Fun, Sweet cemented his place as a wry, intelligent lyricist who could meld catchy, melodic pop with a driving, guitar-heavy sound. Now working on his first studio album in three years, Sweet will be launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project sometime this month; more info to come soon. He’s also heading out on the road for over three weeks of US tour dates taking him down the East Coast and through the Midwest (scroll down for complete dates). Fellow ’80s pop songwriter Tommy Keene will be the support act for the first 10 shows including NYC and DC.

Today, Paste Magazine premiered the video for “Every Night Every Day” from his critically acclaimed album Close To The Floor. “‘Every Night Every Day’ is, for lack of a better word, the darkest thing I’ve released,” said Sweany. “I really wanted to push the vocal and unison guitar to the raunchiest point I physically could, to vent the frustration reflected in the lyrics. I feel like the moody, noir-ish look of the video captures that.”
