JENNY SCHEINMAN’S ‘THE LITTLEST PRISONER’

The Littlest Prisoner, the latest from critically-hailed singer, violinist, composer and arranger Jenny Scheinman, will be released May 6 on Sony Masterworks. Her eighth studio album, The Littlest Prisoner follows Scheinman’s 2012 release Mischief & Mayhem, which All About Jazz called “a near-flawless package of musical craftsmanship.” Scheinman, whom The New York Times has called “full of playful ideas” and “a soulful, generous improviser.”

Mixed by Grammy-nominated producer, Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Neko Case, My Morning Jacket and Sufjan Stevens),   the album was recorded in just three days of studio tracking in Martine’s Flora Studio in Portland, Oregon.

Of the album, Scheinman says that she “had always imagined that this album would have a sort of Buddy Miller acoustic Americana sound,” however, “as fate would have it I ended up bringing the material into the ethereal, moody, stripped down world of my trio with Bill Frisell and Brian Blade. This added a sense of newness, risk and adventure to the process, which was extremely exciting.”

NEW SINGLE BY JON MCKIEL

Jon McKiel returns with his self-titled EP, available from Headless Owl Records on June 03, 2014. Noisey recently debuted the video for I Know (I Know) from the album.

Comprised of six, sure, rock and roll songs, Jon McKiel is a consice record emboldened by McKiel’s rigorous experimentation and collaboration with producer/improviser Jay Crocker (Ghostkeeper, No More Shapes). Here again, McKiel’s warm, plaintive voice and considered poetry blend with charming pop craft, analog tetures, and thick guitar tones, creating powerful, emotive, but somehow unassuming indie rock.

WIRE: NEW ALBUM BY MYSTIC BRAVES POSTED

It’s no wonder why The Zombies asked Mystic Braves to open their L.A. show last year. While the hometown favorites were barely even a blip on their respective parents’ radars when Odessey and Oracle was released, the psych-steeped five-piece sounds like they stepped straight out of the ’60s. And not in an obvious, someone’s-been-studying-their Nuggets-comps-until-the-grooves-give-out sort of way, either. We’re talking a richer, fuller plot of references (garage-borne greats like The Electric Prunes, The Chocolate Watchband and The Music Machine) that filter the band’s hook-centric purple haze through robust organ rolls, runaway guitar riffs, heat-stroked horns and a rhythm section that can only be described as “restless”.

ROYSKOPP AND ROBIN SINGLE OUT TODAY

Do It Again,” from the Do It Again mini album, available May 26th on Cherrytree / Interscope Records, is one of the most effervescent, effortlessly uplifting electro-pop tunes of recent years, and started life as a rave-inspired throwback. The inspiration for the “accidental pop song” came after a night out together in Bergen. It was just one of 5 tracks inspired by each other’s company, which compelled Röyksopp and Robyn to create something they had never done before. The ‘Do It Again’ mini album represents the perfect coming together of three very original musical minds.

WIRE: STREAM R.E.M.’s 2001 UNPLUGGED VERSION OF “THE ONE I LOVE” VIA ROLLING STONE

R.E.M. delivered two knockout performances on MTV’s acclaimed “Unplugged” series, the first in 1991 and the other in 2001, giving them the unique distinction of being the only band to appear on the series twice. Surprisingly, audio from both shows has never been available, making these some of the most demanded music in the R.E.M. vaults. That all changed on Record Store Day 2014, when Rhino released both performances as a limited edition, four-LP vinyl set. The collection includes every performance from the original broadcasts, as well as 11 songs that never aired. Following the sell-out of the limited edition vinyl Rhino will release the collection digitally and as a 2-CD set on May 19th.

BORN I MUSIC VIDEO “HAVANA”

One could say that “Havana” (out this spring on G&D) is equal parts Hip Hop and underground House, but its haunting keys, driving kick and infectious bass line create an atmosphere that goes far beyond its points of reference. The sound is lush yet subtle, broad yet compact. A reflection of the duality that is always present in Born’s music.

UK DUO COVES FIRST SINGLE “BEATINGS”

Coves spent the last 18 months quietly acquiring critical acclaim in the UK, with support from BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, Huw Stephens, Nick Grimshaw and many more. Their scuzzy cover of Chris Isaak’s classic “Wicked Game” peaked at No. 1 on Hype Machine. Following a set at Latitude 2013 that found the band playing to a rammed and rapturous tent, they signed to Nettwerk Records. They released Soft Friday in the UK last month, and joined Band of Skulls on the road as support.   Next week, they play The Great Escape festival on the NME Stage alongside Charlie XCX.

WIRE: SYLVAN ESSO NEW VIDEO

Sylvan Esso was not meant to be a band.   Rather, Amelia Meath had written a song called “Play It Right” and sung it with her trio Mountain Man.   She’d met Nick Sanborn, an electronic producer working under the name Made of Oak, in passing on a shared bill in a small club somewhere.   She asked him to scramble it, to render her work his way.   He did the obligatory remix, but he sensed that there was something more important here than a one-time handoff: Of all the songs Sanborn had ever recast, this was the first time he felt he’d added to the raw material without subtracting from it, as though, across the unseen wires of online file exchange, he’d found his new collaborator without even looking.

WIRE: DIGITAL CUMBIA ON THUMP

THUMP travels to Lima, Peru to delve into the complex sonic history of digital cumbia in the latest installment of its Sub.culture series. At the critical intersection between a sonic past rooted in indigenous Amazonian rhythm and a future outstretching into a globalized electronic scene, this hybridized genre poses viewers with the questions of what is national vs global sound, how does a sound become representative of and owned by a people and what is the future of the dance floor. To answer the latter: “If it’s not a mixed dance scene, it’s going to condemn itself to death.”
