GOLDEN SMOG ROLLS IN WITH THE BEST
August 5, 2008
In the late ’80s, Minneapolis was home to a tightly knit music scene that claimed its fair share of groups on college and alternative radio playlists. When they weren’t playing in their own bands, singer Kraig Johnson (Run Westy Run) and guitarists Dan Murphy (Soul Asylum) Gary Louris (the Jayhawks) and Marc Perlman (the Jayhawks) got together as Golden Smog to play with friends and have a good time. The band recorded a pair of albums for Rykodisc in the early ’90s, featuring Uncle Tupelo/Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and drummers Noah Levy (Honeydogs) and Jody Stephens (Big Star).
Rhino brings together the essential tracks from both of those early releases for STAY GOLDEN, SMOG: THE BEST OF GOLDEN SMOG. This 18-song collection also features an alternate version of the fan favorite (“Until You Came Along”) and an unreleased Brian Wilson cover (“Love And Mercy.”) On September 23, this compilation will be available from Rhino Records at all retail outlets, including www.rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $16.98 on CD and $10.99 for digital download.

JAMES TAYLOR ‘COVERS’ GENERATIONS / TRACKLISTING
August 5, 2008
Hear Music announced today that it will release James Taylor’s exceptional collection of covers from notable recording artists from the fifties, sixties and seventies. The album is aptly titled ‘Covers’ and will be available at all traditional retail outlets and Starbucks Company-operated locations in the U.S. and Canada on September 30.
“An album of other peoples’ music is something I’ve been wanting to do for years,” says Taylor. “I’ve enjoyed performing these songs over the years but to record them live in a room with these incredible musicians was just extraordinary.”
The album was recorded last January when James Taylor gathered his ‘Band of Legends’ for a rare 10-day recording session in a converted barn on his property in western Massachusetts. Band arrangements of material featured on the album include covers of Big Mama Thornton’s version of “Hound Dog,” Junior Walker’s “(I’m A) Road Runner” and “Wichita Lineman,” (one of the most revered country songs penned by Jimmy Webb). These songs were improvised on the spot and recorded live with some of the best players in popular music.
Track Listing:
1. It’s Growing (William Robinson, Jr.-Warren Moore) – made popular by The Temptations
2. (I’m A) Road Runner (Edward Holland Jr.-Lamont Dozier-Brian Holland) made popular by Jr. Walker & the All Stars
3. Wichita Lineman (Jimmy Webb) made popular by Glen Campbell
4. Why Baby Why (Darrell Edwards-George Jones)
5. Some Days You Gotta Dance (Troy Johnson-Marshall Morgan) made popular by the Dixie Chicks

MAVIS STAPLES TO RELEASE LIVE ALBUM
August 5, 2008
Truly great live albums are about capturing lightning in a bottle, that rare and perfect convergence of time, place and performance. When legendary soul/gospel artist Mavis Staples returned home to Chicago this last June for a performance at The Hideout, Chi-Town’s renowned stronghold of alt country and purist rock and roll, it was undeniably such a moment.
Those who packed the sold-out club were blessed with a riveting musical statement as Staples, backed by her fiery three-piece band and three backup singers, put on a rousing musical tour de force. Fortunately, for those of us unable to be there in person, the show was recorded and the album, Mavis Staples Live: Hope at the Hideout, is set for release November 4th.
POISON/DEF LEPPARD FEUD RAGES ON
August 5, 2008
It all started a while back when Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott said Poison was a band more interested in their looks than their music. Since then, there’s been a war of words between the groups, with Leppard singer Joe Elliott calling Poison drummer Rikki Rocket a “f**king idiot.” Now, the kitman has responded on his MySpace page. He writes in his blog, “For f**k’s sake, Joe Elliott! Joe, king of the power mullet, at this point you need to shut the f**k up! No more talkin’ s**t. I’ll give you a choice on how you go down. Arm bar, leg lock, shoulder lock, triangle, back choke or knock out. You pick! Let’s get it on!” We’ll keep you posted on the back and forth, but it looks like Poison and Def Leppard will not be sharing the same bill.

QUOTED: PARAMORE DON’T FEEL LIKE ROCK STARS
August 5, 2008
Paramore have quickly become one of the biggest bands in the world, but how does that make them feel? Singer Hayley Williams shares her thoughts.
“It’s weird because we can come on TRL and hang out. But like we don’t feel like huge successful rock stars. I don’t think you can measure it by material things or even accomplishments. I think you have to be happy with what you’re doing and love it.”
Paramore play Little Rock, Arkansas tonight.
