MAD MEN: MUSIC FROM THE SERIES, VOL 1 - 6/24/08

May 22, 2008

image0011.jpgSet in 1960 New York, the Golden Globe Award winning TV series Mad Men is a provocative drama about the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue advertising. Created, executive produced and written by Matthew Weiner — the Emmy Award-winning executive producer and writer of The Sopranos — Mad Men takes an unflinching look at the ad-men who shaped the hopes and dreams of Americans on a daily basis. The soundtrack mirrors not only the time and place, but sets an emotional tone for the critically-acclaimed series.

On June 24, 2008, EMI/Manhattan Records releases MAD MEN: MUSIC FROM THE SERIES, VOL 1, which includes musical standards such as “On The Street Where You Live,” “Fly Me To The Moon,”  “Volare,” and “Manhattan” by Ella Fitzgerald.  Also featured are the show’s theme song, “A Beautiful Mine” by Aceyalone & RJD2, as well as original music by the show’s composer, David Carbonara.

Alexandra Patsavas, Grammy®-nominated music supervisor and founder and owner of Chop Shop Music Supervision, serves as music supervisor for the soundtrack, which joins Patsavas’ impressive credits that include Grey’s Anatomy, The OC, Rescue Me, Gossip Girl, Without A Trace, among others. There is no question that music helped define that decade and music plays an important role in the series.

DANIEL LOWERY SALUTES AFRICAN-AMERICAN TROOPS

May 22, 2008

“I, Too, Sing America.” This simple, yet poignant poem by Langston Hughes embodies a spirit of pride and patriotism that African Americans feel but rarely verbalize.

Not since that poem, written several decades ago, has there been a more stirring and heartfelt tribute to America by an African American artist than Daniel Lowery’s “I’m An American.”

THE MAKING OF A ROCK BAND: STEEL WOOL

May 22, 2008

gas-welding.jpgIt is very rare that I will make a house call to check out a new band. In life though there are always exceptions to the rule.

Last night I went to meet with a rock band out of Lynn, MA due to my friend Jonny Rabbitt. Jonny and I have known eachother for a while and he has an everlasting passion for music & playing. He has been in band after band and creating music is just in him. The band rehearses tirelessly two nights a week perfecting their songs.

Jonny’s new band that he is working is called Steel Wool. Three bikers Jonny (Guitar), Nate (Bass), and Steve (Drums) all work together in the metal shop. They all play music together so they named the band, Steel Wool. The lead singer is 24 year old Derek Lee. The music can be described as diverse. It is in between GNR and STP. It’s hard rock, but not metal and it’s loud! The manager of Steel Wool is Kathy, Jonny’s fiance and their friendly pitbull, Gibson, is the mascot. Gibson is the biggest, sweetest pitbull I ever met.

So the dilemma that the boys were having was that they wanted to take the music from their apartment in Lynn to music enthusiasts all over the globe. So we sat down and we noticed that they have nothing set up except the music. The fact that all they had was the music was actually a good thing. We talked over an hour and we decided the boys need to set up a MySpace page (www.myspace.com/steelwooltheband). They need to let the world see a bio, images, MP3’s, videos, etc. The more they can get up there, the better. Fans not only want to listen to bands, they want to see, hear, watch, interact, all that!

After that is done it’s all about promotion, promotion, promotion. The guys did a 4 song set for me which I enjoyed. One song that stood out to me was, “So Sorry.” These guys can hold their own on their instruments and they play very well together. You can tell that Steel Wool would put on a kick ass live show.

Throughout the night we enjoyed some Bud Lights and pizza. I thought it was a successful night. I believe that Steel Wool is now 20 steps ahead of where they were before.

The bottom line is that not one person can say whether a band will make it or not. The beauty of technology is that a band like Steel Wool can now reach people all over the world. Let the people hear the music!

The best way to see if a band is a winner is to let the people decide, the music speaks for itself. We will be sure to keep our readers current on what happens with Steel Wool.

She Wants Revenge in Lauderdale

May 22, 2008

she-wants-revenge-1.jpg
Front man Justin Warfield was sporting a creepy moustache at last night’s performance of She Wants Revenge in Fort Lauderdale. What is up with the moustache trend in the indie rock scene? I live by these words of wisdom “Guns don’t kill people, men with moustaches kill people”.

May 22, 2008

american-idol-top-24.jpgI will admit I am not a fan of American Idol at all. I have actually never even watched one full episode. One thing I am though is pretty hip to the ways of the music business and how this machine works.

NEW VIDEO HERE FROM NO VERTIGO

May 22, 2008

Cavedoll’s No Vertigo, the latest of 10 releases due out in 2008 by this absurdly prolific group from Salt Lake City, Utah.  NPR’s Second Stage featured the group’s song Decoder this month recognizing the bands ability to “serve up a hip-shaking burst of feel-good energy, inspired by ’80s synth pop, electronica and punk.”
