ROCKARCHIVE ARRIVES IN NYC FROM ENGLAND
May 13, 2008
Ten years after establishing itself in England, Rockarchive, the famed photographers collective, has just opened its first gallery in America. The firm’s inaugural show in the new world is now gracing the walls of the Rockarchive Gallery in New York City. Located at 516 W.25th Street in Chelsea, Rockarchive has taken over the space that used to be occupied by the Eyejammie Fine Arts Gallery. The New York location joins Rockarchive’s two outlets in London, as well as those in Brighton, Amsterdam, Dubai, Tokyo, and Sydney.
The New York show comprises a rich sampling of the broad range of art and artists that has won Rockarchive its sterling reputation to date. Spanning the last five decades, the show boasts thrilling photographs of such Hall of Fame rockers as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious, the Ramones, Debbie Harry, the Police, Madonna, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kurt Cobain, White Stripes, Lenny Kravitz, and Amy Winehouse. The photographers are equally legendary, including Mick Rock, Bob Gruen, Kate Simon, David Corio, Barrie Wentzell, Shiela Rock, Storm Thorgersen, Gered Mankovitz, and Jill Furmanovsky.
It was Ms. Furmanovsky who founded Rockarchive in 1998. By then she was widely regarded as one of England’s premier rock photographers, having established herself primarily though a lengthy stint as the house photographer at London’s Rainbow Theatre beginning in 1972. The best of that work is collected in book form in “The Moment: 25 Years of Rock Photography” (1995).
Jill conceived of Rockarchive as a rock and roll version of Magnum Photos, the groundbreaking agency and archive formed by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson and two others in 1947. Rockarchive selects its members most iconic images and makes these images available in superbly printed, limited editions, each print signed by the photographer and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
Rockarchive in New York is open daily, Tuesday through Saturday, from ten a.m. until six p.m., and Saturdays from one till six p.m. To delve deeper into Rockarchive, kindly visit www.rockarchive.com.
NEW WEEZER ALBUM PUSHED FORWARD
May 13, 2008
The streets can’t wait any longer: Buoyed by a single which reached #1 at Modern Rock radio a mere eleven days after its release to the format, and a tidal wave of buzz, Weezer’s new, self-titled album on DGC/Interscope Records has had its release date moved up three weeks to June 3.
The latest single “Pork and Beans” produced by Jacknife Lee (U2, R.E.M.) has been embraced by Modern Rock radio making it the quickest journey to #1 that any Weezer single has found in its illustrious history. The single has earned rave reviews in the UK’s NME and Rolling Stone.
The new album which is the third eponymous in the band’s catalogue and is being referred as “The Red Album,” was produced by the band, Rick Rubin, and the aforementioned Lee.
THE HIVES GET REMIXED WITH NIKE
May 13, 2008
The Hives’ signature sound comes to bear in this inspired Nike+ Original Remix. Pulling elements from The Hives’ smash hit The Black and White Album, the production duo, Expensive People, craft a completely new running adventure.
This 45-minute journey begins with a steady warm-up and then allows the runner to find his/her stride before culminating in a fast-paced, high-energy explosion. The run closes with a restorative cool-down and leaves fans with a newfound appreciation for this iconic Swedish rock band.
Runners take their cues from the changes in tempo, instinctively picking up the pace when the music intensifies, catching a breather as the beats slow down. Black, White and Run can be used for tempo runs or simply as motivation to add a few bursts of speed to your regular runs. Elements from “Tick Tick Boom”, “Try It Again”, “Won’t Be Long” and others show up in this audio odyssey, delivering the vocals you love–remixed to create the ultimate runner’s companion.
