May 7, 2008
Annie Lennox, Leona Lewis and Queen featuring Paul Rodgers are just a few of the many musicians that plan to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday next month. The event, which takes place on June 27th in London’s Hyde Park, will see a crowd of 46,664 – Mandela’s old prison number. Organizers also promise some surprise stars that have been kept under wraps so that both the audience and Mandela can be surprised by their involvement. U2, Amy Winehouse and Eminem are among those rumored to be surprise guests. Other confirmed performers include Simple Minds, Razorlight, Dame Shirley Bassey, Spanish group Amaral, Andrea and Sharon Corr and many others. Mandela spoke about the concert, which benefits his AIDS charity, noting, “You all know that I am supposed to be retired. But my friends and the charitable organizations that bear my name want to use my 90th birthday year to raise funds to continue our work and so of course I want to help them.” Tickets go on sale on Friday.
